I have turntables connected to a mixer, then the mixer is connected via Line IN to my powerbook running panther

i went to sound settings, then Input, i clicked Line IN, and ihave input level working, it sees the sound fine, but why isnt there sound coming out of the speakers?

how do i make it so that the sound from line in comes out to speakers?

    Ugh god damn it

I got this program called Sound Studio

It has an option called play-thru.. which is what I needed.. its so I can hear it through the speakers whats coming in line IN

But the fact is.. its delayed, and I need it to be very precise since these are my DJ monitors. Isn?t there a way of doing it?? How come its so easy to do on PC but on MAC its hard, and I need special software to do it? I thought mac was supposed to be so good for studio work

    Ugh

    pleasesomeoe help

Hi, I bought the Griffin iMic and with it came a program called Final Vinyl, which that works good. Also GarageBand's monitor feature works good too.

In the old days of OS 9 we, well many of us, got used to the play through ability of our Macs... I like you was surprised when I moved to OS X that Apple would take away the very thing that put them on the map for me. Well, it turns out that they didn't.

I too, like you hooked an audio input source to my computer and I could see in the system prefs/ sound control panel that the input level meters would flash from the sound I was puting in, then I toggle to the output and there would be nothing... How could this be? Well the fix is a bit better than what we ever had before.

Here is the fix. Open your hardrive/applications/utilities/Audio Midi Setup. You will want to be in the Audio devices side. This is the nuts and bolts of what the sound prefs do in a simple way, and then some.

System settings will be for built in audio throughout, unless you are configuring for a third party audio card.

At the bottom of this panel there is two white boxes, you want the one on the left. There will be three lines there. M,1 and 2. You will want the top line or M line, on the extreme right there is a box with the word thru labeled above it. Put a check in that box and you will now be able to play audio through your mac. Don't worry about any other check boxes, just set that one to Thru.

I have the stereo output from my digital cable running to mine, but any stereo source can be connected. It plays through to my audio system connected to the computer, and I hear the Mac's system sounds as well... The audio midi setup panel gives us more control over what we can do with the audio through the Mac than we have ever had but why audio is not defaulted through the Mac in the first place is beyond me.

Enjoy. This tip is hard to find.

If you ever have the extra cash and are serious about making music with your Mac (I don't know if you're just listening to vinyl or using turntables as an instrument) you might consider a FireWire audio interface to keep things digital.

    Good luck!

GarageBand's monitor feature has noticeable delay. Sometimes as much as an entire quarter note (at around 60BPM).

    hey djmb,

same problem... i'm running an iMAC (10.4.7) and in the midi settings, i cannot check the THRU box for M

1 or 2........tried Garage band and the monitor works but that's alot just to get audio throughput...

found a great program very similar to SOUND RECORDER for windows...

it's called AUDIO RECORDER....very simple one window sound recorder, multiple format output and a MONITOR option!! sweet

this is my first mac and i like it but windows seemed much easier sound options...

thanks for your post, it set me on the right track!

Go to Line In. Lets you hear line in without starting a big audio editing program.
