CD ripping G4 Dual 1.25 vs G5 Dual 1.8
Does anyone know why the Dual G4 rips faster than the Dual G5 with ITunes?
15 x vs 12 x.
Could it be because the G4 has a Combo drive and the G5 has a Pioneer 4x DVD drive (106D)?
Both Macs have a 160 GB disk, ATA vs SATA.
Or is it because the Altivec isn't optimized for the G5 yet?
TIA

There in lies your answer. The sdrives dont have supa snappy cd performance compared to a combo drive.

Hi Mac Hammer Fan.
gsxrboy is almost certainly correct. There is an easy way to verify if it's the optical drive.
1) Insert a CD and use the finder to copy a track onto your desktop. This will be uncompressed.
2) Launch iTunes and drag and drop the file from your desktop into the library.
3) Select the new track in the iTunes library, go to the advanced menu and select "convert selection to AAC". The computer will now be compressing a file from the hard drive and the limiting factor should therefore be CPU speed not media speed.
If you do this, let us know what happens...
I will let you know the results as soon as possible...
But it was a 1st generation Dual 1.8 with a slower Pioneer 4x 106D.
That can be the reason for the slower speed.
