I did a search and can't find a thing anywhere on usb 2.



Maybe the forum is screwed up.



Anyway, does anyone have any info about when Mac is releasing this into any of the computer lines?



Pc's incorporated this a long time ago.



Does anyone think Apple is prolonging this to promote Firewire more so?

    I don't think that Apple would come out with USB2 without Firewire2 first...I dunno, maybe I'm crazy.

    Theres nothing cutting edge about USB 2. All it does is improve upon the original in terms of speed. Yes it has a higher theoretical speed than firewire BUT firewire has a higher sustain rate. Hence no digital camcorders making the move to USB 2. I think apple made the right decision to wait to incorporate 2.0. Let them add it when firewire 2 comes around. There's no rush. If people feel the absolute NEED to have USB 2 devices right now, go spend get a PCI card.

    NO this is NOT a good thing



    USB 2.0 devices are out NOW and are usually $20 cheaper then the same device only with a F/W connection. Although the connection may be better, i want to have the option of saving $20 here and there... it is quite ridiculous as most PCs come with USB 2.0 standard now.



    "good job apple" ?? WTF? WHAT possible good comes out of holding back the current standard on the mac... its not like it would HURT anything to add it... so why not give the option to the consumers?



    its like sticking with thousands of colors instead of millions for no good reason... it would cost what, 50¢ extra per machine to add it? <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

    The importance of USB 2 for me is with a 667 Titanium and Digidesign's Mbox. Supposedly audio will kick much more ass with my setup when I get a next generation laptop with USB 2. I could be wrong but it seems with the much greater throughput it couldn't hurt.

    Supposedly, we'll see some updated Firewire and USB ports with the next round of machines. Why do you think they're switching off OS 9 on the new machines? They could very well just not support it but leave it on. The reason is they don't want to write the new drivers for USB/FW for OS 9, so they're just switching it off.

    Yep, your wrong. Mbox will have no performance gains from usb 2. Its based on the USB 1.5 spec, and will not perform any better when connected through a computer with a USB 2 port. Now if digidesign updates the MBox to support 2.0, THEN we'll see lower latency, etc. Though it would probably make more sense to go w/ firewire or at this point just hold out and go with firewire 2 in the near future. But i guess they dont want it to tread on the 002's turf.

    USB 1.1 delivers enough bandwidth for any outboard consumer digital audio or MP2 decoder/encoder (real time) DVD-V and DVD-A deliver about 9.6Mb/s USB handles 12. But firewire would be better for higher bandwidth or fast transfers etc etc.

    Also remember, USB2 taxes your CPU far more than USB1 did. Firewire hardly does at all.

    yeah and if this bothers you you could always just stick with USB 1 devices.. noone is twisting your arm forcing you to buy the cheaper USB 2.0 devices... but of course not having 2.0 in the first place limits your options

    If you connect a USB1.1 device to a USB2.0 device, yolu will slow down the USB2.0 device to 1.1 speeds.



    The "B" in USB has been made useless. You're expected to buy a USB 2.0 hub in order to use more than one USB 2.0 device.



    Firewire doesn't have this problem so long your slower devices are attached at the end of the daisy chain.



    USB 2.0 is a joke. It's a hyped serial port that ties you down to a CPU (and hogs the CPU too).



    Firewire still has an opportunity to kick USB's butt into obscurity.

    Then who should, you? There are a ton of technologies out there, and it wouldnt be good business to just start incorporating ALL of them. Just because its out doesnt mean it should neccessarily be USED. USB 2 isnt the only thing out there that isnt getting put into the new macs yet. And apple has reallygood reasoning NOT to put USB 2 on yet.

    The 640KB of RAM argument again...and we all know how that turned out.



    The only reason USB 2.0 isn't on Apple's boards is because they need to look better on spec sheets. USB 2.0 is slower, sure, but on a spec sheet it looks better. 400Mb/s vs. 480Mb/s.



    And I'd like to point out to you that USB 2.0 isn't exactly obscure, in fact it is probably less so (now) than Firewire/iLink/IEEE 1394a. There are plenty of devices out there and almost every PC has it now, as previously stated. This isn't like taking a dive and including a hyper-mega-fast optical port for which no devices (essentially) have been created for yet. This technology is really out there in mass quantity.

    IF Apple manage to get a regular supply of the chip necessary to implement FW2 in their Winter update (which will be all about connectivity, to distract us from the GAP), THEN USB2 will be included too. However, little will be said about it.



    It's all about marketing - not data...

    IMO, the update (should it occur, and there not be a drought till the 970) will be more about quad processors than connectivity.

    IEEE 1394b is backwards compatible with Firewire.



    Same thing with USB 1.1 and 2.0.



    If you check my posts you will see that I never advocated the inclusion of the 1.6Gb/s IEEE 1394b variant.

    Most peripherals ( mostly scanners and printers ) that I have seen with USB 2 also have FW.



    Is this really an issue for Apple or should those wanting it be telling the vendor of the device they need to have FW added ?

    yes this is true most supporters of USB 2.0 also have F/W options, but it seems the F/W is usually $20 more then the USB 2.0 version <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> unacceptable. I realize that f/w is a better solution, but that does not justify jacking up the price $20

    $20 freak'n dollars! you are worried about 20 dollars?! i'm sorry dude but if 20 bucks worries you about getting a better connectivity solution how do you justify owning a mac?
