Theft, Piracy, iTMS & U2

Just when you think most people "get" the iTunes Music Store, Bono, facing an fortunate circumstance, shows that he really gets it.

Quote:

Last week, U2 had their recently completed new CD, which is planned to be released in November, stolen during a photo shoot in France. Fearing that the new album will show up on peer-to-peer file sharing services for free, U2's lead singer Bono has come up with a solution. "If it is on the internet this week, we will release it immediately as a legal download on iTunes, and get hard copies into the shops by the end of the month," he said. "It would be a real pity. It would screw up years of work and months of planning, not to mention f***ing up our holidays. But once it's out, it's out."

Using iTMS preemptively against P2P piracy. Totally bril. Of course, this won't prevent the songs from appearing on the networks, but this is such a progressive tactic. (And good for iTunes).

Yep, good move on U2's part

Can only be good for the platform too ... though it is rumoured that the "missing CD" is not really missing at all, just a bit of a publicity stunt by the group to hype up the release. Now something like that could never happen ... could it?
