I think most game programmers on Linux use SDL:

I've been a long time (year?) lover of
Cube
, and that uses SDL. As does the GL port of DoomLegacy.

If you're just getting started I would suggest looking at
pygame
(which also builds on SDL).

Indeed, SDL is the go, or, if you're really hard-core, OpenGL.
You probably also want to look at Open AL for your audio stüf.
