Andy grove (intel ceo) officialy declares that they can't continue to increase density (thus Mhz) like this !

he declares that near 70% of power required for processors is leaked !

pentium 4 now is about 100W (85 avg) !!

maybe a new area for the PPC which don't suffer of power dissipation problem, and ALREADY as SOI, copper etc ...

what do you think ?

The processor bit bad for all of us. Who cares about his political views?

Yeah, but if it lets the PPC catch up them maybe chip companies can start innovating on important things than just jacking up the GHz.

as i read AI threads here, i see many post about intel claiming that they will not reach 4GHz or more... but instead "starving" at 3.2 or 3.4 until the *end* of year 2003 !!!

maybe leaked current/heat dissipation problem ?

    big hopes for the 970

    100W? wow....it sucks up as much power as my home stereo <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[Surprised]" />

Anyway the p4 3 ghz is a great chip.

It is inevitable that for general computing use a ceiling will be reached for Mhz of the processor, just as consumer automobiles have reached a ceiling for HP. The question is when do they do this, and will Intell slow down enogh for IBM/Moto to match the same relative performance than Intel chips are getting out of their 3 Ghz chips by then end of 03 or even 04?

More probably, cause I doubt you listen to your music loud enough to need 100w constantly

thats a lot of power for a computer to take up.

Does the TOC of a computer include electricity, as well?

For the average home user, maybe not.

For any customer that's deploying them by the dozens, or hundreds, or tens of thousands, certainly. Energy Star compliance has been as successful as it is because it's one of those areas where business and environmental interests dovetail nicely.

Except that Intel already has a 3.6Ghz part ready to go. And they're already working on the problem. They'll shrink the fab process down again, add SOI type fab technologies, and hyperthread. In a few months, when Banias comes out, you'll see that they're working on a laptop solution too, at 1.5-1.6Ghz it will spank current P4-M's. Unlike Moto/Apple claims, when Intel drops the Mhz rating down, it truly won't matter, since performance will still increase. P4 itself has not been a dog since they reworked the earliest versions, they have been steadily improving it's performance (relative to clock speed). So, they will run into a wall, yes, but they'll hit it long before anyone else. For such statements to be made, means they've already tested some limits in the lab and have solutions ready to go, Banias is but the first.

Anyway, Intel will add at leaast 600Mhz to their top P4 before the end of 2003. When was the last time Moto, or IBM added 600Mhz to their top end PPC in one year? Oh, that's right, never.

I'm just surprised that anybody buys an Intel chip. My AMD flys, and I don't even know what the bloody chip IS. I had it built by a PC junkie about 6 months ago and the sucker is faster then.... well faster then my quicksilver. So in anycase, the P4 here at the office is clunky in slow, same OS, same ram. ?

That 600 MHz is 19.6% - Motorola added 25% to the G4 in the latest bump.

See Tom's Hardware. Very reliable, they've seen the part, it's comming in '03.

yea, and last year we heard that there were 2.4 GHz G5 foating around.

Dont believe what you hear, just whats for sale

Toms Hardware routinely samples pre-release parts from AMD, Intel and various Mobo makers, they don't do rumors, we're not talking about the mac web here, 99.9% of the stuff they test shows up within a few months. Go check it out for yourself.

Last time I checked, the 3,6GHz part is to be shipped late/end 2003. Source: Intel roadmaps.

Did I say anything different? 600Mhz, One year. No doubt. They'll probably beat that too. Wanna bet?

This question will be irrelevant if Apple starts to use 2 and 4 processor configurations in their machines.

[[[So, they will run into a wall, yes, but they'll hit it long before anyone else.]]]

Matsu, I'm willing to bet that IBM will take the PPC technology a lot further than anyone else. Let's just watch and see. \t

    \t

[[[For such statements to be made, means they've already tested some limits in the lab and have solutions ready to go, Banias is but the first.\t]]]

All speculation. The same can be said for IBM and we already know that their monsters perform incredibly well. What do you suppose is up-and coming from IBM, eh?

    \t

[[[Anyway, Intel will add at leaast 600Mhz to their top P4 before the end of 2003. When was the last time Moto, or IBM added 600Mhz to their top end PPC in one year? Oh, that's right, never.\t]]]

I wouldn't count IBM out too soon my friend; besides, just adding MHz. to make things *appear* better on paper rather than in noticeable, real-world performance are totally different things. ;-) Again, you are falling for what essentially is a type of"bench-racing" -- a term used in the automobile "hot rod" community. Go look the term up.

    \t

[[[See Tom's Hardware. Very reliable, they've seen the part, it's comming in '03.]]]

    RealWorldTech... Even MORE reliable ;-)\t

    \t

[[[Did I say anything different? 600Mhz, One year. No doubt. They'll probably beat that too. Wanna bet? ]]]

Oh give it a break, ok? Sheesh!\t

Anyway, let's wait and see now that IBM is getting involved. Perhaps programmer has a few things to say...

I don't doubt that IBM will also have good chips out, but some of you make it sound like Intel is fading, when in fact they're gathering steam, Banias will be out in Q1'03, and it's good. Adding 600Mhz and rolling out a new laptop architecture in one year is a lot more than either Moto or IBM have done in recent years. Only the 64bit transition leaves any hint of doubt. Will Wintelon go IA64 or X86-64 ??? Intel will be ready in either case, you'll see.
