Stupid Safari Tricks: Download window

The download window finally annoyed me enough..... so i 'fixed' it:

It is now a 'Panel' window and floats above all other Safari windows.

Downloading porn never tasted so good.

Also, now it disappears when I Expose and is drag-gable from the sides.

Just a bit of NIB file-ry.... hmm sounds illegal.

That is sweet. Looks amazing. You need to suggest that to Apple to put in Tiger. Tell us how to 'fix' our safari download window as well please. Can't wait to do it

    hmm its not too hard:

Show safari's package contents (archive it to a zip first...just to be safe):

Navigate to and open the NIB file: (you must have Interface Builder installed from the dev tools)

Its should appear somewhat like this:

Hit CMD-5 to bring up the class inspector, click on Panel to change the window type:

Hit CMD-1 to make the panel also float on top of all windows, checking utility:

    CMD-S to save,CMD-Q to quit.

Relaunch Safari and you'll see something like this:

If you want to drag by side play around in IB.

the brushed metal on his download window is also on the left and right margins... On mine the brushed metal is only at the top and bottom, the left and right is just a black line.

He merely made the content field (blue and white area) smaller..."behind" it is all metal, you just never see it... exposing any metal makes that part draggable. All (most) metal is draggable.

I personally think that the download manager should be like the bookmarks organizer in Safari- a little button that switches your current page to the organizer, and then you click it again, and it returns to your previous page. Plus, this way, you can have your download manager in a tab, or in its own window.

Download manager in a tab would be awesome. I sent that in to Apple some time ago. Maybe someday it will appear if enough of us request it.

but it wouldn't even have to be in a tab...it could be in any Safari window you wanted it to be in. Also, it's not really necessary to have the DLs window open all the time, so it would be nice to just click: DL manager, and click: back to your webpage.
