New 1.8" (iPod Size) "iVDR" Hard Drives. They are currently available in up to 80GB, and cost from $166 to $249. They are expected to double in size in 1st quarter next year.

The iVDR consortium is hoping to reduce the price to less than $80.

The most expensive item in the iPod is the Hard Drive, and a sub $200 160GB iPod would be WAY COOL, no?

Unfortunately it sounds like these drives are bigger than the current drives in the iPod. They're both '1.8"' drives, but the housing et all sounds larger.

I think a 60 gig iPod that has a case that changes color would be a good reason to replace my 5 gig iPod. Jeaze, i've got to stop jumping on the techno bandwagon right away every time.

to me the article mentions the size of the '1.8" as slot in drive, which means it has a cover + bridge etc.

by the way, Toshiba is in this harddrive consortium too, so i guess a 1.8" will be just that as this organisation strives for standardisation overall.

my guess for future products would be cheaper ipod's +new 40G top of the line(no more 5G) ?>then we'll see the new idevice with 60/80G drive, tft/lcd screen, FW2 + bluetooth (also on ipod) and WiFi 2(802.11g)

go figure all the goodies it could hold, but i feel certain

    that ipod=sound+audio

    that i<newname>=image + video

this means that ipod could get radio, voice record, (record anything), phone

this means that i<newname> will get video, store images, web capable (wifi), store film, record film/photo

    just MHO

While you guys bitch and moan about what new iPod will replace your old / updated iPod. I still struggle getting my first...

I do hope we see larger HDs in ipods. Maybe the 40Gb iPod could be the entry level....

These drives do not sound as if they are iPod sized, so I don't think this has any impact on the iPod in any way shape or form.

Why is bigger iPod a "cooler" iPod? Like more MHz means arbitrary speed improvement in everything you use the copmputer for?

Any iPod is a nice versatile piece of equipment. More versatality is what is needed.

Dear lord! Who has 160GB worth of MP3's? I'm having trouble filling up my 20GB encoded at a higher encoding rate.... Think of an iPod that is the size of half a deck of cards...mmm...

I agree. Along with better firmware updates that manage battery resources better.

I agree. Better battery management is needed badly. My iPod keeps showing 0% battery left, even though its fully recharged and 1 month old!

Well... I think I have about 80 Gb.. And someone might want a small firewire-to-go-harddisk..

me! well not 160gig but about 112gig all told. i moved from london to rome and transporting about 3000 cd's was very impracticle so i went on a ripping frenzy. if i could carry ALL of my music in my pocket, i would be VERY happy as the ability to predict what i WILL want to listen to and to load my 20gig ipod up with the correctly anticipated selection is somewhat hit&miss.

the extra 40 odd gig remaining from a 160 gig drive would mean i could have all my dvds in my pocket too!!

someone explain to me why this would be a bad thing???

i guess you could say i have a diverse taste and an insatiable hunger for good sounds. i don't think 3000(ish) CD's is that unusual.... is it?

a good 2/3s came from a local 2nd hand dealer.

to get back to the thread a bit, i understood that toshiba were the only company producing 1.8inch HDs. if the capacity that has been touted here is true, who is the manufacturer?

I agree with lungaretta. Not even a 20 GB iPod holds all of the music I always want with me. 100 GB might do it though. I'm also very, very jealous that you're in rome.

    Best

    Earth.

Hitachi, not Toshiba, appears to be the big player according to this article.

hey lungaretta... Im in Rome too now. I know Via Lungara all too well

What ya doing around here? Plans for tonite?

    Rome IS great, aint it?

anyway, I hope iPods do become bigger PODS... a thing to put your STUFF in. Bigger HDs seem like a fundamental part of the POD concept.

also... seeing my digital camera just got stolen, looks like i'll def put off buying an iPod for a while... at least it gives me a definite excuse to wait for an iPod v2

I agree that a larger drive is not worth it if it costs even a little more. Not just for the MP3 function, that is. Even with 112 GB of music, you don't need more that say, a 10 GB iPod. I have a 5 GB version (that cost of early adoption is that you sit still while the world passes you by... ), and my music won't fit on the iPod. But that is what playlists are for! I made up several ~1 Gb playlists that cover my complete collection, and set the preferences to update only a couple of selected playlist at a time! 10GB of MP3s is still several days of continuous music! And synching a different subset of lists takes only a few minutes the next time you charge your pod!

Now the larger drive might be worth if if Apple further diversifies the iPod function set. But all told, I would rather pay for a smaller more robust drive drive. One with legendary durability, able to withstand 24-7-3645 usage. one that won't fail despite being used as a boot partition for a driveless mac, that has a pod docking port. That way, I can move from work to home with all of my work on my "MP3" player. Then a 100 GB drive might be worth the money.

I suspect the new idevice (PlayPod?) will sport a Firewire2 port. Problem is no existing Mac sports such a port. And I think that's imPORTant....ok enough! SO......for this reason I think the intro of this new iDevice will coinside with the intro of new or updated desktop machines.
