Google News already does this pretty well. I don't see how Apple could improve it. Plus would you really buy a new mac for iGrabber?

Hotmail does a pretty good job of e-mail. That doesn't mean that a .Mac membership and using Mail.app is better.
There at 1st generation Power Macs, or Power Mac G1s, Power Mac G2s, Power Mac G3s and Power Mac G4s. They refer more to the entire architecture than the individual processors.
G1 PowerPCs are 601-based.
G2 PowerPCs are 603 and 604 based.
G3 PowerPCs include the 740, 750, 750CX, 750FX, and the upcoming 750GX. They are all basically the same but with different L2 caches.
There is no such thing as a G4 PowerPC, because of an IP dispute they are "PowerPC compatibles" (henceforth to be called "PPC-Cs").
G4 PPC-Cs include the 7400 and 7410
G4+ PPC-Cs include the 744x and 745x
The G4+ introduced a new core with double the AltiVec units (4), a 7-stage pipeline and 3 levels of caching. The 744x doesn't include the 3rd level though.
The proposed G4 after next, the 7457-RM, is really a 5th generation processor when compared to the original G4.
--------------
All of these generation names were assigned on the assumption that there would only be one series of PowerPCs. However, now there are two, with the introduction of POWER-lite PowerPCs.
Presumably, the next Power Mac will be a "Power Mac G5 featuring the PowerPC 970"
Voice of Reason: Wouldn't need to be with my iMac predictions
iMac 17" for $1199
800MHz G4 Processor, GeForce 4 MX, Combo Drive
Voice of Reason: Apple's supply of GeForce 2 MXs must be running thin, Read-Only drives have been dumped from the eMac range, current stocks of 800MHz G4 motherboards can find a place. Also, Apple doesn't have any 15" displays left, customers shun the 15" display in favour of the eMac because it is higher-res, so 17" is "low-end"
iMac 17" for $1699
1GHz G4 Processor, GeForce 4 MX, Super Drive
Voice of Reason: The G4 is getting fast and cheap (Dual 1GHz upgrades, rumored 1.83GHz next Power Mac). 1GHz is a conservative guess.
iMac 19" for $1999
1GHz G4 Processor, GeForceFX Lite, Super Drive
Voice of Reason: A $1999 needs something to justify it's price tag. How about a 19" Display (Thank you, Quanta Press Release) and GeForceFX?
iBook 12" Laptop for $999
800MHz G3 Processor, Combo Drive
Voice of Reason: It would be bad (from a marketing standpoint) to have faster G3s than G4s. So 800MHz. Again, Apple is getting rid of read-only (which never should have been used after the floppy was killed)
iBook 10" Tablet for $1199
800MHz G3 Processor, Combo Drive
Voice of Reason: It would be cool
iBook 12" Laptop for $1199
1GHz G3 Processor, Combo Drive
Voice of Reason: Faster! Faster! No Super Drive because it would take away from PowerBook sales
iBook 14" Laptop for $1599
1GHz G3 Processor, Combo Drive
Voice of Reason: Some people like having the choice of a larger display (for tired eyes)
iPhone Mobile Phone for $399
Full suite of PDA features (but read-only) USB and Bluetooth Sync, new interface for text-messaging
Voice of Reason: TradeMark, and Steve Jobs conceding to the NYT that an Apple Mobile Phone would be very good
iCam digital still/video camera for $799
FireWire 2 connection to iMovie/FCP.
Voice of Reason: There is a lot of buzz inside Apple (apparently) about this MacWorld. Barring an extremly unlikly Power Mac G5 debut, how about two Digital Devices? FireWire 2 will set this camera above the rest
FireWire 2 PCI card announced for Power Mac.
Voice of Reason: Something needs to interface with the camera (at full speed)
iGrabber application to "grab" news off the internet
Voice of Reason: This is the only iApp that I could think of which doesn't already exist, but should. Most people spend 30 mins to an hour on the internet doing "regular" searching of news sites. This would simplify it, and there are plenty of existing news grabbers for Apple to rip-off"
Now Barto, that's what I call a thread response premium. If ONLY Apple's line up did look like that. Barto for marketing.
I like your top of the range iMac with 19 inch screen and Geforce FX lite. Killer machine. IF it had a 1 gig - 1.4 top end G4 (C'mon....13 die shrink. 'power'Macs still dual.) I may be tempted by such a machine beastie.
Like yer iBooks. C'mon though, Apple's darling is the iBook, big gap between it and Powerbook. I sez iBook can have a superdrive. Drive sales on more. Even if it takes some Powerbook sales away. Still in the same pot.
A cheap single G4 at 1 gig. New 'budget' tower a couple of hundred less than the low-end dual Tower.
Hey, where's my iCube under the price of the eMac? The Dell bustin' iCube? Headless!!! PRiced to go at £399-499 inc VAT. Features 1 gig G3. Small white plastic cube with apple logo. Geforce Mx4. Bare min' ram and harddrive.
Like your 'grabber' application. Grab the news. I like that. Take the effort out of searching for it. Hey, I'm lazy. That's why I use a computer...
The Cream. iBook tablet. Awesome idea. I've seen an XP tablet. Let me tell you. Impressive. I was amazed by how it handles Word and my handwriting (no easy task!!!) Apple could murder them with COOL! Apple tablet is the smack down to M$!!
Best idea of the bunch.
iPhone. Trust me. IF apple could make one that does what we want it to do...sync with the hub and pda and iphoto take photos and share 'em in iPhoto... Killer device. Apple COOL in white. Me buy? Yes indeedy.
iConference/video app. Good idea. It's one area that's dying to be appleised!!! Dying fer ease of use the Apple way. Killer app.
Panther. 10.3 could be heaven.
I'm backing Barto's predictions (wishingly) for 2003.
Plus my iCube, plus my dual and quad and octo 970 POWERmacs with Xserves pasting it to the Dell Man.
Lemon Bon Bon
PS. Happy NEW YEAR to all those crazy Apple loyalists on these boards. 2003 is going to tear up the Apple rule book for the last few years.
I say MWSF is the official Firewire2 (and associated devices) coming out party. By the way, can I see a show of hands for those who will be there? >hand<
In July, at the Last MacWorld New York, indeed the last summer MacWorld, the Power Mac G5 will be introduced.
It will be available in 3 models, all using dual PowerPC 970s.
1.2GHz, 600Mhz System Bus (4.26GB/s)
1.5GHz, 750MHz System Bus (5.33GB/s)
1.8GHz, 900MHz System Bus (6.40GB/s)
4 Memory Slots for Dual-DDR266, Dual-DDR333 and Dual-QDR400.
One AGP 8x slot, with whatever the latest nVidia and ATi graphics cards are.
SuperDrive standard on all models.
The biggest news: Modular form factor.
As standard is the power supply and core, with a UPS an option (far left).
However, using GigaWire for ultra-high-speed data transfer, stack-ons are sold. The computer is a GigaWire chain
There are GigaWire standards for storage (removable and fixed, ROM, RAM, R and RW), PCI over GigaWire and Digital Video.
GigaWire modules available from Apple include "CD6" for CD-Servers (far left), a "PCI6" and "HD6" (left), and lastly "CD2" and "Combo" modules (with 2 PCI slots and 4 hard drive bays, right).
GigaWire Bases are sold to connect modules to the external GigaWire ports on PowerBooks.
GigaWire is also used between system chips. There is an external port for linking two cores together (to form a Mega-Mac).
The three system chips on the PowerMac are "GigaNorth", "GigaSouth" and "GigAudio".
GigaNorth powers the CPUs, Memory and AGP.
GigaSouth powers the internal drives (using Serial-ATA), FireWire 2, USB 2 and Ethernet.
GigAudio powers the line-in, line-out (front-channel), rear channel and center-sub ports.
The Power Supplys have power ports for speakers and displays, and all data and power in the GigaWire chain travels through the feet of modules.
I'm wondering if this prospect might shed some light on the old story about a cube-like Mac returning to the lineup. Same principle as what you're talking about, Barto, but a different form factor.
Apart from that, at the risk of seeming unduly pessimistic, the evidence to hand is that 2003 will not be a peaceful, carefree year. I don't need to belabour the point. In this circumstance, I can't see Apple or anyone else grabbing a bucket of new marketshare: people tend to stick with what they know in uncertain times.
Yes, side by side was what I had in mind. Makes more sense with cube-ish boxen. When things are stacked upwards, then the items on top cop the most heat.
I think it would be really cool (ahem) to make the neo-cube a hexagonal prism. Then you could join them into a honeycomb-type arrangement.
Excuse me while I take the time to disagree with you, Clive.

You didn't take any time to disagree, if you had you would have stated some argument that pointed towards me being wrong. Facts are that Apple is not going to get 10% market share in 2003 and InDesign is not going to gain more than 50% of the page layout market in the same period (in fact ID will do well to gain 15%).
Modular Mac: c'mon people, it may look nice, but what it adds up to is $500 CDRW drives and $1,000 HDs - it may have worked when a new Quadra was $10,000, but not today.
How can someone who supposedly knows so much about DTP not realise that people hate Quark? People hate Quark so much, and all the pain it has caused them - especially when they have seen Mac OS X and know they can't use it - that they are activly looking at "switching" to Adobe!
I don't know if the modules would be expensive. I just hope they wouldn't be. Maybe someone with a little technical knowledge could give us some insight.

And it's only a few days into 2003!
All white, eh?
I love the concept. I do like the 'Giga North et al'. Intriguing ideas.
The MAMMA of all shredded wheat boxes.
If the real 970 is anything like as exciting, we'll all be happy.

I wouldn't imagine the 970 being quite so 'grill' happy. A little more white spacia, perhaps with the odd grill or chrome accents.

In was a series of black, slab-like modules you just stuck together in a row. Sideways though not on top of each other.
You'd start off with the basic PSU, Processor, and Ram modules, then stick extras on as and when you needed them.
Can't remember what it was called, but it looked amazing, It was shown in an early issue of T3 magazine.
I think it would be really cool (ahem) to make the neo-cube a hexagonal prism. Then you could join them into a honeycomb-type arrangement.
I'd love to see pix from that T3 mag. Anyone?
