Hotmail does a pretty good job of e-mail. That doesn't mean that a .Mac membership and using Mail.app is better.
There at 1st generation Power Macs, or Power Mac G1s, Power Mac G2s, Power Mac G3s and Power Mac G4s. They refer more to the entire architecture than the individual processors.
G1 PowerPCs are 601-based.
G2 PowerPCs are 603 and 604 based.
G3 PowerPCs include the 740, 750, 750CX, 750FX, and the upcoming 750GX. They are all basically the same but with different L2 caches.
There is no such thing as a G4 PowerPC, because of an IP dispute they are "PowerPC compatibles" (henceforth to be called "PPC-Cs").
G4 PPC-Cs include the 7400 and 7410
G4+ PPC-Cs include the 744x and 745x
The G4+ introduced a new core with double the AltiVec units (4), a 7-stage pipeline and 3 levels of caching. The 744x doesn't include the 3rd level though.
The proposed G4 after next, the 7457-RM, is really a 5th generation processor when compared to the original G4.

All of these generation names were assigned on the assumption that there would only be one series of PowerPCs. However, now there are two, with the introduction of POWER-lite PowerPCs.
Presumably, the next Power Mac will be a "Power Mac G5 featuring the PowerPC 970"

I'm wondering if this prospect might shed some light on the old story about a cube-like Mac returning to the lineup. Same principle as what you're talking about, Barto, but a different form factor.
Apart from that, at the risk of seeming unduly pessimistic, the evidence to hand is that 2003 will not be a peaceful, carefree year. I don't need to belabour the point. In this circumstance, I can't see Apple or anyone else grabbing a bucket of new marketshare: people tend to stick with what they know in uncertain times.
Yes, side by side was what I had in mind. Makes more sense with cube-ish boxen. When things are stacked upwards, then the items on top cop the most heat.
I think it would be really cool (ahem) to make the neo-cube a hexagonal prism. Then you could join them into a honeycomb-type arrangement.

You didn't take any time to disagree, if you had you would have stated some argument that pointed towards me being wrong. Facts are that Apple is not going to get 10% market share in 2003 and InDesign is not going to gain more than 50% of the page layout market in the same period (in fact ID will do well to gain 15%).
Modular Mac: c'mon people, it may look nice, but what it adds up to is $500 CDRW drives and $1,000 HDs - it may have worked when a new Quadra was $10,000, but not today.
How can someone who supposedly knows so much about DTP not realise that people hate Quark? People hate Quark so much, and all the pain it has caused them - especially when they have seen Mac OS X and know they can't use it - that they are activly looking at "switching" to Adobe!
I don't know if the modules would be expensive. I just hope they wouldn't be. Maybe someone with a little technical knowledge could give us some insight.

In was a series of black, slab-like modules you just stuck together in a row. Sideways though not on top of each other.
You'd start off with the basic PSU, Processor, and Ram modules, then stick extras on as and when you needed them.
Can't remember what it was called, but it looked amazing, It was shown in an early issue of T3 magazine.
