Once upon a time there was a 6800 .....
I wrote this as a reply in another thread and decided it should have a thread of it's own!
Once upon a time there was an NVIDIA Geforce 6800 Ultra. It would make all the people in Fairytale Land very happy. For weeks in September all the people stood watching, waiting and nothing happened.
"The people are getting angry!" said King Steve. "Tell them to be patient for the 6800 will make their life better. Tell them October. Tell them the 21st, the 29th, tell them something!"
And the minions spun the new tale to all the people in Fairytale land. Anxious to see, to own this new amazing device the people wait. Can the days in October be true they wonder. Will it really be November?
Then one day in early October, from where no one knew, started the terrible rumor that King Steve wasn't Steve Jobs as all the people in this story believed but in fact was Stephen King and the October dates will bring the same terror as did the September promises!
1. There's a check in the mail.
2. I'll respect you in the morning.
3. The 6800's will ship in late October.

Hey, everyone has known for a while now that there have been serious issues with the 6800 cards. It's not an Apple issue - it's an NVidia issue. I for one would much rather wait that extra time for my 6800 equipped G5 with the security of knowing that the bugs have been worked out. And you know what...if they don't ever work the bugs out I'll choose another solution.
In the meantime I don't think it makes much sense getting your knickers in a twist day in day out over a quality control process that is designed to provide the customer a product that works trouble free. How would you feel if they shipped the 6800 in your G5, along with the 30" monitor, only to have it spew garbage on the screen and have to be returned? I have a feeling you'd be starting a thread complaining about that too if it did happen. Just chill out - I'm sure it will all be worth the wait in the end.
"Right now we have 'X' problem. We are doing our best to resolve it. Right now we hope to be shipping by XX/XX/XX. On 'this day' we will make a further announcement on our progress."
No more bull shipping dates.

I agree 100% and I am also tired of the bull and the excuses. Make an announcement advising what the problem in fact, IN FACT is. Stop with their fictional shipping dates and provide the facts.

I've been very excited at the promise of the 6800, so I've been keeping an eye on the progress since it was announced, along with the 30" monitors of course. While I'm not ready to commit to another Apple display just yet due to problems, I do want a very powerful vidcard, and the 6800 seems to be the one. However, it's NVidia's problem now, and until that is fixed I'm sitting back waiting to see what happens. Also, how can they - NVidia - post a definite date if they can't fix the problems? Sometimes you have to keep delaying and delaying product from the original planned launch date due to unforseen technical issues. I'd rather be told that "we'll let you know when we can ship you a working product" than be sold a lemon.
Just my 0.02..

You said it all! "I'd rather be told that 'we'll let you know when we can ship you a working product'" Just tell us the truth! That is all I want. Tell everyone the truth instead of all the various false promises over and over and over again! It is that simple!

I don't believe the Nvida 6800 Ultra Mac edition really exists.
I'm begining to believe Apple wishes it didn't exist.
They censored and removed my complaints from their boards.
Do you think it was something I said?

2 seems fine for me. Thanks for asking.

Can you say "Dept. of Redundancy Dept." ?
One thread about this is more than enough in my opinion. Just bitching day in and day out is completely pointless. Who gives a **** if Apple deleted your posts? If they are as mind-numbing as these have been (and of course they are!) I can't blame Apple for the removal.
Wonder what AI preferences are for that? Is an announcement enough to make something "current hardware"?

I'm even doubting they should be in "Current Hardware" if they ain't shipping yet.

Good point.

Auslander, we have a recent difference of opinion. I think it time some one from Apple or Nvidia step up and respond to these repeated delays. You don't agree and that's fine. Apple pulling the complaints was something they could do and they did. I would rather have seen some official response but they didn't.
I respect your opinion. I can't help but wonder if this is so mind-numbing why do you invest so much time reading and responding?

The 6800 Ultra is still the best of the best and will be for quite sometime. The 6800 and ATI x800 series cards are still the top cards in PC land. I have a 6800 GT in my pc and it's f*cking wicked.

If it's been announced as an available product, it's Current Hardware, even if its availability is delayed.
This thread is redundant. Continue discussion in the original thread.
