Sadly, I don't think anyones disputing the fact that Moto are working on a G5 processor, it's just never going to be destined for a competitve general purpose computing platform like the Macintosh.

The fact is that Moto have no mindshare at Apple anymore, and they know it! Hence, the focus on networking and comms applications for their "G5".

Motorola it self speak from a G4 and G5-based host processors".

what suprises is me is now moto says all it's divisions are profitable... i thought their semiconductor business was sure to go...if not atlesat their fabs...might just as well outsourge everything..

Personally I hope Apple uses these new Moto G5 chips...to POOP ON!!

I'm afraid they are merely refering to the announced, but yet to be released, 8540 and 8560 chips based on the e500 core. I stopped caring about the fate of those. Maybe they'll end up in a future car or network switch of mine...

you have to remember that the g4 which apple currently uses is the "embedded processor of the year".

i think motorola can and will make a processor for apple AND its core markets.

the statement was very vague though.

look for the 8540 and 8560 in the very near future.

these are motorolas new embedded processors and they are due this quarter.

if they make it to market this quarter it MIGHT be an indication that motorola is getting back to some sort of "normalcy".

    im hopeful.

They don't have altivec. What good are they besides powering non computer devices?

Even if Motorola plans to implement a desktop version of either the MPC 8540 or MPC 8560, please note that even the article you quoted says,

"The C-10 NP and Q-10 TMC are targeted for clock rates starting at 600Mhz and are expected to use packaging and process technologies aimed at cost-effective, low power system implementations. Development tools for the C-10 NP and Q-10 TMC are expected to be available in Q2 2002 with silicon sampling in Q2 2003."

    and they don't mean fiscal quarter. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    the suffering continues

I'd like to point something out to you:

    AUSTIN, TEXAS ? 22 October 2001

In other words, don't hold your breath. Yes, MOT will continue to make processors, but their primary direction is the embedded market. They gave up on the desktop arena some time ago.

There certainly will be some incredibly powerful processors coming in future Macs, but I'm willing to bet they will not be from MOT...

Motorola does appear to be turning around, and Mot SPS does appear to have dodged the guillotine.

I wouldn't be surprised if, a couple of years down the road, Motorola takes another shot at higher performance processors. They're more expensive to design and fab, but they're also more profitable per unit, and they help pay for new fab technology. But they won't roll out anything too ambitious too soon, I don't believe. They'll want to just stabilize for now, and build themselves back up.

Since the 7457 and the 7457-RM should be very nice CPUs for what they do, I can see Apple continuing to buy them. Just not for their desktops.

My guess would be late summer, actually, but the way engineering projects go, it is possible it will take a bit longer. One thing is for sure -- the second they are ready to go, Apple will be all over them.

Apple wants to ship fast machines, and they are aware that MOT isn't cutting the mustard. People often decry Apple and Jobs for the MHz available in their machines over the past year or so, but I assure you, they are more frustrated than end-users are.

Perhaps Apple's G5 will be a cell phone.

I have speak with a motorola's engineer about the next processor for apple. He say that they have loose an important contract. IBM have make a better proposal...

Does anyone remember (from someone whose screen name is a four-letter-word) the suggestion that IBM might be sandbagging?

With Apple just unveiling a new PowerBook G4 at 867 MHz, I guess we won't be seeing any GHz G3++ iBooks any time soon.

    I wonder...

Maybe it's the cores? or better yet the process?

    Heh, Moki tease.

Yeah. Apple's 'power'Mac sales are taking one hell of a beating. Many moons ago (when I first looked at buying my POWER(they were THEN!)Mac clone, Apple were touching POWERMac sales of half a million per quarter. Admittedly pre-iMac.

Currently they're hovering above 150,000 units. Certainly below 200K per quarter. This isn't good enough for Apple. Not good enough for the 'innovation' leader. Not good enough for their flagship/premium margin product.

People aint fooled. They KNOW Apple are struggling on this. Luckily, Apple are doing well in almost every other area outside of CPU/Bus from Software to OS to hardware design.

The end users know that this is a drought and that sooner or later, something has to give and when it does the performance boost will be considerable. That's why 'power'Mac sales are reaching a bottleneck.

The performance of the 'power'Macs aint terrible in real world use. But in context of the whole computer market and Apple's claims to be the 'innovater'. They just don't cut the mustard on performance or price.

Apple's 'power'Mac sales are in for a further rough ride for the next half a year. I can certainly wait THAT long for what I've waited years for. A POWERMAC! Worthy of name and price.

"Apple wants to ship fast machines, and they are aware that MOT isn't cutting the mustard. People often decry Apple and Jobs for the MHz available in their machines over the past year or so, but I assure you, they are more frustrated than end-users are."

I can well imagine how Steve Jobs feels. His company is doing everything right about now. Takin the fight to M$ (audaciously taking on the weak M$ apps first, Explorer, Powerpoint, Excel via Filemaker...THEY'RE two steps away from the the supreme iOFFICE!) Jag' is almost awesome. The laptops stunning. The iBook now retails for under £800 inc VAT in the UK! Unbelievable!

    Now. The desktops, Mr. Jobs...please.

Moki hints: light at the end of the tunnel via a 970 summer release. Apple users will be all over these machines as soon as Apple is all over them. I think I can see 'power'Mac sales becoming 'POWER'Mac sales of a half million. Easy.

For Motorola? Their RapidIo G4 fest may suit the iMac/laptops. However, if they drop the ball on that one? .9 970s will blow them out the water. Moto' seem to be having problems with .13. They promised this stuff ages ago. A year on from dual gig 'power'Macs and we're still only 250 mhz ahead.
