iPod, iPad, iSlate, iFrame, iScreen

So at the Vegas CES frenzy we had announcements from various companies of 'video jukeboxes' (Archos and others) ie; iPod type devices with 4" x 6", 5" x 7" screens for showing photos and and playing out MPEG4 movies etc. We had larger cheap screens just for displaying photos. We also had wireless 'smart screens' (Phillips et al) that hook into PC's running WinXP that allow you to walk around the house tapping away with stylus or on-screen keyboard; and then of course we have the tablet PC's. One of the interesting things was that all of these (except the tablet PC's) were about 3 months away and all seemed seriously flawed in some way or another. I.e. they all looked like desparate 'concepts' looking for the next big thing.

We know Apple must be looking at all these areas (Kormac's i****'s and e****'s?) and that Apple always has to bring its own twist to keep ahead of the game. Rendevous/Bluetooth/Airport Extreme must be significant in this regard.

My personal favourite is the enlarged iPod for iPhoto and QT integration (40gig 1.8" discs are available in March) but I think the rest of it is all up in the air....what do you think?

Rumors were rampant about a tablet with an 8 inch screen being introduced at MWSF that would do all and more you mention. There was lots of discussion here about the possibility. It didn't pan out.... yet. We'll see.

Apple is trying to simplify the computing experience, not complicate it.

MS complicates the process so MS qualified people stay on good wages.

Simple folk require simple hardware. Does your VCR double as an alarm clock?

Who actually needs a 19" iMac? Who Actually needs an expandable iMac? Would it be that great 90% unwashed masses who never upgrade? It must be. (or maybe it Myst be !!!! - note the multiple exclamations).

    Good NewYear to You All.

    Should do this when I'm sober x 2. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

It would be a beautiful thing to be able to surf the web on a tablet with 6" X 9" screen while sitting on the john. If that image is a bit much, how about surfing on your iPad while sitting next to your wife who's watching tv. Or hitting the web in bed while she does a bit of late night reading. Put a cell connection in it and you can use it to surf and play .mp3s on the train to work.

Make it water proof and you could use surf the Web while relaxing in the hot tub.

All rumors point towards iSlate being the name. If Apple's got a tablet coming out I'll be first to buy it. There's a lot of ebook readers coming out but that's all they do, and I want to be able to do more than just read books. I saw http://www.islate.org and they have a lot of information on the Apple tablet coming out.

Look at the iPod/iPhone and iMac. That's Apple. Right there. Look at iPhone OS and Mac OS X. That's Apple. Right there. They do simple. Why some people want to complicate it...I don't know. I like simple. The Mac is a clever computer for stupid people. The pc is a stupid computer for clever people.

I'm happy with the Mac. It works.

As for the slate. I think it will be an iPhone/iMac wrapped up in 10 beautiful inches. (Whole lotta love.)

I think it will be Apple's Jewel in the Crown. A defining moment in mobile computing.

I think we have a few weeks to wait...
