How to find out CPU model number?

Hi,

I'm trying to identify exactly which CPU model number is in a few of my friends' machines. In the Wintel world, there are many [free] applications that can do this.

Are there similar applications for Macs? Apple System Profiler doesn't tell me much. I've checked www.apple-history.com, but there are some ambiguities in the exact models.

For example, I'm curious to know if my Powermac Dual 2.0GHz uses the 970 or the 970FX CPU. Further, a friend of mine wants to know whether his 1.0GHz iBook uses the 7455 or 7447a CPU.

Many thanks in advance.

EDIT: I got those CPU numbers from www.apple-history.com

Perhaps the Terminal tells you more.

    Open Terminal, type in:

    "hostinfo"

    push enter.

    Thanks for that.

Hostinfo gave me 7450 on a 550MHz PowerBook as well as on a 1GHz iBook. Is the 7450 designation just the family number? That is, will a 7455 be listed as a 7450? According to http://www.brainyencyclopedia.com/en...ed_by_cpu.html the iBook G4 should have a 7455, but hostinfo gave me 7450. Further, I guess my PMG5 uses a 970, rather than the 970FX then...

Not that any of these make any difference, but I'm just curious.

    Thanks again...

You can identify your CPU-model with MenuMeters. Just let the CPU-Meter run and you'll see what processor you have by clicking it.

Seems to give the same info as hostinfo. Thanks. I was kinda hoping for much more details like the Wintel programs (you can see from the screenshots). But anyway...
