    There's the actual article.

Mac OS X, with the firewall shut off, is exposed to many attacks, but is not compromised. As messieurs Acohido and Swartz say, there are a lot of Windows systems out there, compromised by various worms, that spew out connection requests to random computers in the hope of finding and propagating to a vulnerable Windows system. That counts for the majority of those so-called attacks.

The basic firewall in System Preferences is on by default, I thought? I would have to specifically allow services to open ports...

Basic Firewall configuration should be proposed the first time you startup your computer, during the registration wizard...

Why on earth would anybody even care what a member of the linux community has to say about security?

    read this article:

    http://www.mi2g.com/cgi/mi2g/framese...ess/021104.php

Scroll down on that page a bit and you will see the "most breached computing enviroment".

    Apple users/owners are blessed.

However, all this means is that as members of the Apple community we must *not* become complacent and think just cause it's unix it can't/won't happen or that somehow Apple, Inc. has all of the expertise on security. WE need to stay vigilant and keep *our* platform the very best. So if the firewalls needs to be turned on by default or whatever - Scream at the top of your lungs at Apple and let's get them to act consistently on security issues. They have done a darn good job so far...

So his benchmark of how few attacks a little-installed OS gets is somehow a measure of security?

GuidoDos (fictional) had zero hack attempts, therefore it must be the best. \

Listing # of successful attacks might be newsworthy. This isn't.
