Assuming there's no g5s, what will satisfy people?

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
It seems like the days following the last 3-4 MacWorlds have been full of posts bemonoaning Apple management, hardware, the morons at Motorola, etc. People are setting themselves up for a major let down again, and considering Apple's (and Motorola's) recent history, it's kind of surprising. So, I'm wondering, assuming the G5 doesn't make its debut, what will make people happy, and what is realistic? For example, is it realistic to expect Apple to redesign the Power Mac motherboard, if the g5 introduction is months away, and would require another revision. If so, what's the minumum people would accept? What about CPUs?

Price drops by at least 40%

Apple hardware IS a major letdown. I'm already used to it.

    Apple software, that's another issue...

All I really care about is a good consumer unit either a 15" LCD iMac running at or above 1Ghz, or perhaps a microtower starting at $1,000 and going up.

I don't care about the PowerMacs execept in how it helps or hurts Apple.

I'd like a bat, so I can wack everyone on the head with it and say "I told you so!"

They need a cheap tower, and open architecture somehow.

Maybe that's a little harsh. I say 35%! Even with an substantial update the cost of everything (but the iBook) in Apple's lineup has to come down 10 to 15%. 15" (especially) and 17" displays have to come down at least 20% from their current prices. They ought to be bundled at a substantial discount on top of 20% lower retail prices.

If there are no G5 then the bare minimum should be:

G4 that supports greater than 133MHz bus. Maybe that 200MHz bus from IBM's Sahara. Double pumped. Speeds should be between 1.0 and 1.4GHz but 1.333GHz would be acceptable. DDR-SDRAM is a must. Upgrading Firewire to 800 or 1600Mbps and USB 2 would be great. More expandable case. Combo drive for low end. 60/80/100GB HDDs and at least ATA100 if not ATA133.

But the G5 will be here so all this is moot.

    DP 1.2ghz Apollo's.

Seems fair enough - think about it. G5 would debut as SP's, I HIGHLY doubt a G5, and then HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt the chance of a DP G5!! Imagine the cost!!

A DP 1.2 would be petty sweet tho

Not that I'm buying another mac during the next 12 months. MWSF '03 for me (when I start UNI, march 2003)

While I encourage people to dream up of possible product designs, this one needs a bit more thought.

Someone has already mentioned the lack of sturdiness. The first thing I noticed was where that CD/DVD slot leads to. Too short of a base to accomodate any CD (unless it's those 3" business card CD's)

I'd be happy with a 15" LCD iMac (same one used in their LCD line, but preferably the widescreen one in the Powerbook).

Give it a 733 G4 chip w/combo drive and 256K of base RAM (the PowerMac towers would go to 1.0, 1.2, and 1.4 G4's respectively).

I think all of this is highly realistic but throw in some stuff like DDR-SDRAM, 133 bus, built in video capture, and a cordless keyboard.

Price the iMac at $1299 U.S. and I think it'll sell like hotcakes.

I always find it funny when people expect Apple to cut out their entire profit margin... Apple AT THE MOST doesn't even clear a 40% profit margin just one look at the end of quarter reports will tell you that. On top of that they have to FUND the development of OS X, iTunes, iDVD and any other give-away apps that the by all rights could/should be selling.

Apple owners are (and should be) willing to pay more for the best... Don't want the best then build a clone and buy Windows XP ('the worlds most secure os') and then the Multi-Media upgrade..

Oh and then don't forget to apply that silly little security update. Otherwise, if by some odd chance you might wanna connect your box to the net someone doesn't hack right into your systems copy all your files and then erase your drive... The worlds most WHAT OS?!?!

Sorry about the tangent but you have to undersand you can't compare Apple prices to the likes of DELL or Gateway or etc, it isn't fair. Apple sells less product (result less profit) AND Apple develops their own OS and giveaway software (software that by most rights they COULD charge for)...

As far as I'm concerned Apple is in a class all by itself and when folks want to turn them into a clone shop it drives me crazy... <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

The reason I said drop the price by 40% is when Apple can't delivery anything.

Apple's current hardware offering just cant' cut it at all. You really are paying almost three times the price but get half of the performance.

If PowerMac really is more than 2x faster than PC I wouldn't mind paying more. But their products right now just don't deserve to wear that insance price tag.

If G5 is coming @ 1.6Ghz then it will deserve that $3500 price tag. Any speed lower than that would be a blow unless the price drops to the $2800 range for the highend.

So far the iBook is the only Apple hardware that has the best in price/performance than the wintel side. Love this thing
