20.1 inch Apple Cinema Display?

Macrumors.com and macitynet.it report that Apple registered a 20.1 flat screen display with the TCO.

macitynet reported: [quote] As you may probably know the certification is released before the product reaches the market and is done on final versions of it so that it complies exactly with the models the consumer is going to buy.

If you go to <a href="http://tco.networks.nu/index_publicsearch.htm"; target="_blank">http://tco.networks.nu/index_publicsearch.htm</a>;

you can search for Apple registrations. (The site doesn't work in IE or Safari for mac)

I am guessing the product will be released when the new Power Macs are released sometime in January/Febuary

[quote] CO certifies the monitors that comply with its standards in ergonomy and keeps a trace of the registered products in its database.

So if you want to find all the products manifactured by a certain firm you can do a simple search by brand, product name or certificate and find whatever the firm has brought to TCO to obtain the certification.

As you may probably know the certification is released before the product reaches the market and is done on final versions of it so that it complies exactly with the models the consumer is going to buy.

Our reader Christos Robotis made a search on the TCO database for work purposes and incidentally discovered that, among well know and old products from Apple, it is possible to find a new one that obtained certification in 2002 (on the 21st of November) and is called "Cinema HD Display".

Nor a 20.1" display exist in Apple monitors line up neither a "Cinema HD" denomination for this dimensions has been heard before.

    So What?

It seems that, following the "go gigantic" trend of Apple started with PowerBook G4 with 17" display, we'll have (when? no crystal ball here...) a big flat display with "Wide" screen ratio to comply the HD definition in the name, bigger than the 19" flat screen that has been rumoured for some time.

So 20.1 inches, Cinema HD and a1038 model name are all we know for now.

The release date maybe not so far... we'll wait and see.

If you want to check and see yourself just go this page

    <a href="http://tco.networks.nu/index_publicsearch.htm"; target="_blank">http://tco.networks.nu/index_publicsearch.htm</a>;

and make a search with Apple in the manifacturer field.

Too bad it doesn't work with our IE o Safari browsers and we had to do a screenshot with IE on Windows... another web site to advice Apple of Safari's compatibility and maybe the reason why Apple rumours sites didn't catch the news before!

So I did a brief search on when the 23" display was debuted and it turns out that happened around March 30th 2002. And yet, according to the above picture, it was certified later in April.

    So? Where is the 20"?

According to MacMinute: NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display of America today introduced its new NEC MultiSync LCD2080UX at $1599 with a very thin bezel. With Dell's 20" LCD as low as $900, I hope that Apple will be somewhat competitive. Also, I hope that the industrial design of the new Powerbooks is a hint of what to expect from Apple for future tower and display products for Pro use.

That table says it's a "Cinema HD Display." The current 23" HD display is 1920x1200 (HD 1--I think it's 1--is 1920x1080).

Me thinks that that assignation was entered into the wrong table cell. It should be in the 23" row.

Anyway, I bet the 20.1" is 1600x1024, and the 22" will be discontinued. No idea on the price. $1699?

So this 20.1" will replace the 22" and be a step up from supposed 19". Damn, now I will have to put my Cineam display and dual gig on ebay so i can get the 970 and a new HD display.

    i doubt that

    2. the 22 inch is i believe appl'e highest selling display ever... why take it away for a smaller size when its selling?

    3. a 17 or 18 inch 16 X 9 display would be a much better option especially if it were around 600-800 dollars

The problem with the Dell's is their ginormous bezels. (The IT department just got a 20" in this past week). Close to an inch and a half.

    My guess:

15" -- Perhaps they'll switch over to the iMac/Lapzilla widescreen; more likely, kill it.

    17" -- 1440x900; widescreen

    20" -- 1600x1024; widescreen

    22" -- gone

23" -- same specs, lower price

    It's an iMac.

Look at the 17" iMac. Even though it has about the same amount of pixels as a 5:4 17" display, it looks a lot smaller (because of much less surface area), and ultimately the 17" display in use is not prohibitively expensive that it can't migrate down into the mid range iMacs. I'll bet that it's just a bit more expensive to make than 4:3 15", and cheaper than 5:4 17" because you pay for these things by the square inch (not the diagnal inch).

Also, Apple is still stuck for a decent desktop chip(set). One way to make desktops more attractive is to add features more agressively than what they've been used to in the past. To at least lead where they can as far as the spec sheet goes. If the 20" is a widescreen it will most certainly cost about as much as 4:3 18-19" screens (again, much less surface area than a squarer display, thus, less cost.) Those screens can be had for 999, the rest of the components of an iMac are dirt cheap, so a 20" widescreen iMac is more than possible at 1999USD.

So, I'll go out on a limb and say, displays stay as they are for now with price drops to the current 17,22,23 while we get a 1600x1024 20" widescreen iMac for 1999, with bluetooth, airport extreme, and FW800. The rest of the spec will be a rather underwhelming 1Ghz G4/133FSB, 266DDR psuedo implentation, mebbe 166/333 to match the PB. VGA out, no spanning (but with 1600x1024 @ 20.1" wide, it isn't really needed)

    Good call.

But...I just checked ship times on the displays. 17" and 23" are 1-2 days, but 22" is 7-10 days. A little suspicious.

Anyway, just sent my defective 22" in for replacement. We'll see what happens...

That's going to be one freakin' looking animal if that turns out to be true. I think the current 17" in relation to the base is stretching it a bit, but a 20" widescreen will look out of proportion.

Then again, it wouldn't surprise me to see Apple do as you say and simply add features but keep it's price points. It's just their way of keeping their margins high by working out better prices with their suppliers.

Not really, the 17 looks better than the 15 IMHO, and there's nothing to stop them from tweaking the size of the base a bit.
