i dont see how that would be possible and wouldnt that mean the 22 inch could drop a considerable amount itself?

The 22" panel was EOLed in December. There is no suitable direct replacement. Does anyone here know anyone who ordered a 22" from Apple anytime this month? Has it shipped?
If the 20.1" is a standard 4:3 screen, then yeah, I think they'll use it to replace the 22". Untill the advent of FOrmac and other 20" 1600x1200 displays, the 22" had been one of the better deals in large LCD panel displays, many of the 18-22 inch panels of other manufacturers were only 1280-1024, but now there's little point to a buying a 22" unless you specifically want to wath DVD's. Don't get me wrong , for equal money, I'd probably still take one over a 20" even at a slight loss in vertical resolution, but not when it costs anywhere from 50-80% more. Panel makers probably see this too.
It's one of those things, Apple will be able to offer a 20" panel at 1599-1699 and still make a serious margin on it, while because of the increased resolution they can claim to have driven down the cost of large screen displays. The 17" really really needs to make a serious drop in price, we'll see what happens.
[quote]It is our belief that on or about Feb. 14th, the original 22" Cinema Display will be discontinued.
...
Replacing it, we believe, will be a new entrant into the lineup: a 20.1" Cinema HD Display, probably priced around US$1699. The original 22" display will be discontinued, and customers upgraded to a newly price-reduced 23" Cinema HD Display, which we expect to be offered at or around US$2999. We also expect to see a price cut on the current 17" model Studio Display.
In addition to higher resolution and their obviously larger screens, there is another striking difference between Apple's 22" and 23" Cinema Display models and the new 20.1" offering: The A1038, unlike the other models in the Cinema Display family, will apparently not be a wide-screen 16:9 format. Why? There are, as far as we can tell, no manufacturers anywhere producing 16:9 or 16:10 format displays at the 20.1" size.

Points off if it indeed will not be widescreen.
Somewhere I saw mention that Apple has partnered with Chi Mei Optoelectronics and they have listed a 20.1 wide screen (F8964 IPS, near the bottom).
Combining information from a variety of OEM sources, we have been able to develop a complete set of specifications for the soon to be released Apple LCD display line. That new line will feature award quality ergonomics, with the much-missed tilt and height adjustability omitted from the current displays, and all three new models will be 16:10 aspect ratio widescreens. Expected within no more than 45-days, the new line will consist of:
23.0-inch - 1920x1200-pixel - $2999.00
20.1-inch - 1600x1024-pixel - $1799.00
17.0-inch - 1440x900-pixel - $799.00
All three displays will still support only Apple's proprietary ADC connector, and will be swathed in crystalline gleaming transparent plastics and chrome.

I've been waiting almost a year for an update to the display line in the mid-range. I will be first in line to get one as soon as they are available online! Great stuff! However, I do wish that the 20.1" was more like $1599...

i doubt that
2. the 22 inch is i believe appl'e highest selling display ever... why take it away for a smaller size when its selling?
3. a 17 or 18 inch 16 X 9 display would be a much better option especially if it were around 600-800 dollars

It would make sense if they dropped to 23" HD down to the current price of the 22"

Didn't think so.

what do you think the name "cinema-display" means?
See the addition to my previous post. A new partnership may mean a widescreen 20".

[Addendum] Ah -- ooh -- well, apparently it's from MacOSRumors.
