Actually, I'm pretty sure it was the 16th (in the evening our time), so it would not have been front page news until 1/17.

I'm pretty sure it was 12am or after which would make it the 17th. IIRC, Bush gave them till that time to withdraw and Saddam didn't. I'll see if i can dig up the newspaper just to verify.

From encyclopedia.com- [quote]On Nov. 29, the UN set Jan. 15, 1991, as the deadline for a peaceful withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. When Saddam Hussein refused to comply, Operation Desert Storm was launched on Jan. 18, 1991, under the leadership of U.S. Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf .

So, I believe it was the 17th that the first bomb was dropped because that days paper said so in the headlines IIRC. Or maybe US declared war on the 17th?
The date of a war has what to do with Future Hardware again?

If you read the thread you'd know that someone was mistaken when they thought the 27th was also the day the Persian Gulf War started which was in reference to a sarcastic reply about Saddam having a cache of 970s.
Heh -- maybe it all hinges on the Raiders winning. The Cali team goes home sad, Steveo's sad. I don't see how the Raiders are going to lose, though...

mm, you don't see the Tampa Bay defense often then huh?
What a strange point of view! The war began Aug. 2nd, 1990.
Back to topic:
IBM said Q3 for production of the 970. So you shoeldn't expect them earlier. But we may see a faster version from the start.
The next update of the PM line will use the 7457. Can Apple use it with an asynchronous FSB - memory bus? I don't think Apple will use DRR400 RAM.
Well, thats when the air war really got cranked up.
Our Apaches from the 1/101st Aviation of the 101st Airborne Division took out some key radar installations which opened up the corridor for the oncoming air attack.
<semantic> afaik there was no declaration of war. sure, military action was authorised by congress, but only to liberate Kuwait. there was no political will to start seeing allied body bags pile up by pushing heavily into Iraq. The liberation of Kuwait was relatively easy ... and cheap as they picked up most of the tab for it. Going any further would also have undermined Bush's approval rating at the time, and the stability of the (largely) unified alliance at the time. Some military advisors proposed going all the way to Baghdad in 1991. That didn't happen, so 12 years later we're playing catch-up...
btw, it was the 'second' Gulf War to anybody from the region: after all, a decade-long international conflict where approx 1 million died is a 'real' war. Except for westerners, as they didn't take part in it. So it's up to you whether you define the forthcoming conflict to be Gulf War 2 or 3! </semantic>
Enough of that. I don't think we'll see anything appear on monday, but i do think we may see some press event called during next week or the week after, to roll out imac and emac revisions. i don't think we'll see Powermac revs until late feb, or ipod revs till march. Mebbe 15" tibook revamp at around the same time as the powermac revisions, or mebbe that'll be staggered to coincide with another ibook bump in a few months. New DLD launch in late April/May. Guess a lot of it depends on the economy and when we invade Iraq ....
ordered it last friday and got it today, 10gig mac, no problem

Check out the availability today.... 5-7 days (actually as of yesterday). When you ordered availability was 1-3 days. This coincides nicely with the release of iLife.
I recently put in an order for a couple powermacs for my department and our purchasing agent said the vendor told us to hold off untill early next week, an announcement of either faster Macs or a price drop is expected.

For all I know, it has been this way since Christmas (I kind of have my head in the sand sometimes), but the 5GB is temporarily unavailable
"Due to significant holiday demand". Perhaps they're re-vamping the bottom unit - at least adding the remote control features to it.

Thats right. I was already in Iraq a few days before that. FOB Cobra which was about 100 miles SE of Baghdad.
Fun place.

They will, about 2-3 years after the rest of the industry of course. Its Apple.

5GB iPod: "temporarily unavailable"
10/20GB iPods: 5-7 days - coincides with Jan 27/28
15" iMac: 2-3 weeks (17" iMac still 3-5 days)
Fingers are crossed
