Apple must be so incredibly tired of Motorola. As soon as the PowerPC 970 moves to 90nm, watch out!

It has a role in the low end -- its power consumption is hard to beat, and the MPX bus is pretty cheap to support (which is why its so popular among the embedded market).

Yeah. Cheap and cool computers. Like iBooks.

The iMac is not cheap. A 975 would be just right for such a digital hub computer.

The iBook, and a possible "MacPC" to replace the iMac G3 (as some forum members believe will happen), can stick with the crappy G4.

IBM gave their timing of their server releases and announced a 2nd half of 2003 release for their PowerPC 970 servers. It's an info not a rumor.

If Apple has a priority on the chip by having a financial agreement on developping this chip they could have it for Macworld. My opinion is a september announcement at Apple Expo and a release in mid-to end october. They know that they will sell very few PowerMac G4 and will try to have a very low inventory. In this case an announcement of 1-2 month before release is not a problem. They will keep those who wants to switch to PC and PC users waiting before the perfomance specs of the new PowerMac will be released.

They need to announce it very quickly. The PowerMac G4 will not sell anymore with or without the announcement.

... and this, unfortunately, is perhaps the real reason why this is the Year of the Notebook.

but after the release of the PowerMac 970 the sales will skyrocked.

The big perfomance boost will be the motherboard with FSB of 2x450 Mhz and the big winner will be Altivec enhanced application and MacOSX. On G4 and its FSB, Altivec can't give the max performance.

Yes, I'm sure PM sales will increase when the 970 is released, but I'm siding with the side of cautious optimism.

"This new PPC processor will take over the world. Intel is doomed."

"This new Mac OS X will take over the world. Microsoft is doomed."

    So how about instead:

"The new IBM 970 will make satisfy most Mac users."

How about it will make it more competative in the market place, most mac users still wont be satisfied...

Which is why I'm buying an Athlon/WinXP box to tide me over for a year.

    Then I'll get a 970

Guys, I know this has no bearing... but I have to share it.

I had a dream last night that I saw the next powermac. It was branded a G5 but the specs had a 970. It looked weird and when I woke up I thought it had happened.. In the dream I had just been going to apple.com and BAM! The front page had a huge picture of it up.

It look like the quicksilver case, only it has the "G5" written underneath (like the G3s did) and it had a raised plastic "X" which crossed the case..

Like this only with the large "G5" behind the X. It was with a black and silver and white motif. The X was about an inch off the case plastic and was clear. The letters G5 were black. The case was silver. The handles came off the X and were clear also.

As you know I never post on this type of stuff and try not to attract attention or start rumors. I had absolutly no contact with anything related to this so what caused this very vivid dream? Its such an odd story tha ti Had to post it on here so you could respond. ??? Was this just a weird ass dream? I NEVER remember my dreams so why THIS one? I haven't had another dream that I remembered in MONTHS....

In any case, okay, I've got it out there. I hope that SJ doesn't have his hit team kick in my door tonight for doing this...

From my perspective, I can do one of two things.

    1) Get a new G4 now, and live with the crapola speeds for the next 3 or 4 years.

    2) Get a PC now (1/2 the price), then get a 970 based Mac in a year.

sorry, i didn't want to troll you, it doesn't matter to me where you want to work on, it only supriced me you actually want to work on a windowXP.

but i've one question: what software do you run that you can switch between platforms this easy? even a adobe design collection will set you back around us$ 1000,00...

would be an expensive move if i would have to do it.

(i'm one of those dying species of software buyers, don't even download mp3's (me, neanderthaler ), i buy the cd of the artist i like. and no, i don't have just 10 cd's)

buying software for a wintel box
