LCD Flat Panel - what would you get with $500

There is no best. Just an ideal.

But when a budget comes into play, the search for a beloved monitor becomes difficult.

Basically...photographic imaging is my thing.

I use photoshop everyday, because I am a photographer.

Now I have done research, and everything seems to get great reviews. But I am still torn.

Is there anything above 17'' below $500 with a higher max res than 1280x1024? Is a 350:1 contrast ratio vs. 1000:1 contrast ratio that noticeable? And how would I notice? In what ways.

Basically...this is asking anyone who has a non apple LCD.

Sony seems to have some 19" LCD monitors under $500. I don't own a Sony LCD so I can't vouch for their quality but Sony isn't a cheap company so I don't know.

It's a tough find, on your specific criteria. Just about all 17"-19" LCDs are 1280x1024. I think I've read in one forum post that someone may have a 19" that runs 1600x1200, but I forget where.

Most LCDs at 1600x1200 are 20", and cost > $500. The cheapest is Dell's 2001FP, which has gotten pretty good reviews, even though the external aesthetics, are... lacking?

It's currently discounted at $599 in Dell Home section.

This is the only dell product I will condone. Currently you can grab it for 505 at the dell business section. Dealnews.com has more info for the coupon codes.

Worth the money if you ask me.

Anyways....I think I found my gem.

This was my dream 19''....and even though its only 1280x1024

I can't pass up the XBrite technology...I'm in love with those screens.

That would be my top 3 choice. Not sure where in the top 3

I didn't know that display had a 25ms response time. Have fun with that if you play games!! That is definitely my pet P about LCDs... 16ms minimum for me....

Response time is how fast the pixels in the LCD can change from the previous state. LCD's have been horrible the last few years and a reason why a lot of professionals have stayed with CRT's until now.

An example. Say you're looking at a video of a wall. And the video pans to the left of the wall to see more coarse material. The pixels will actually ghost and slide causing a blurring effect for a few moments. This is due to the response time on the LCD's. The faster the response time the better. To me there was a HUGE jump between 25ms and 16ms. 12 is the best right now. The bigger the monitor the harder it is to find a fast response time. Though I believe all of the ADC's are 16ms. That's damn good for a 23 and 30 lcd.

The Dell has a 16 also. Basically if you like tripping on LSD you might welcome the ghosting. Personally I can't stand it... even though I love acid :P

I hope it won't be distracting.

I just want to be able to use photoshop flawlessly....and eventually final cut pro, etc.

I use my comps to watch dvd's all the time so I also hope that won't present a problem.

Now you got me a little nervous....but I think I'll be ok with this Sony.

those are nice screens, I was checking those out I believe at best-buy..Im looking into a flat screen as well.

While it is $599, and thus outside the stated range, I would still have a look at Formac's gallery 1900, especially since you mentioned photography. I had the predecessor at my last job and was very impressed. The color accuracy (after a quick spydering) was great.

I don't have a link handy, but Samsung has just release some new models with a supposed 8 ms response time. The 19" one was mentioned at $547 in the article I saw.

Yeah, but I'm guessing a many of us Macheads would dearly love a 17" Cinema Display offering from Apple.

Somehow I don't see it coming...given their desire for you to spend more and just get an iMac.

Right. There loads of threads about on the 'net regarding 3rd party displays all of a sudden.

Mind you, I'm happy to get a $999 20" from Apple. But a 17" would be sweet. It would also unfortunately kill off the iMac

so I'm not waiting for one.
