If PM has 1Ghz SP-What'll Be in new Imac?

Yeah, the low end PM had 1Ghz SP. Will Apple do the same if they update the iMac any time soon? Would they put lower mhz DP G4s in the Imac (Duel 667 or something) Any ideas?

Sorry, but I don't think the iMac or any consumer machine will ever see duals.

one cheap either 800 or 867 model and two 1 gig models...g

    Like the Gelding sings.

    Low end, 867 G4.

    Top end, 1 gig G4.

The rest differentiated by price and features.

    One year and no bump?

I'm expecting deep price cuts to put the iMac 2 where it should be. In the original iMac's price bracket. Two models under a grand and two just over with the top end iMac just over the entry level 'power'Mac. This is more like it Apple.

    I don't expect G4 at 1.2 gig...but hey, an entry level iMac2 for £850 inc VAT?

15 inch flat screen. Geforce 2mx and 867 mhz. Bargain.

Same again but 17 inch widescreen flat, more ram, bigger hard drive. £999 inc VAT.

Next. £1,195. Same as above but with 1 gig G4, Geforce 4 MX and superdrive.

Next. Top of the line. £1,350 inc VAT. Same as above but with more ram and bigger hard drive and 1 gig. Maybe better graphics card.

Either way, if the iMac2 reflects the 'power'Mac overhaul in 'value' and 'realignment' of price (hello reality!) then I may sniff around for a 17 inch iMac 2 to tide me until the 970 arrives in the 'power'Mac.

I'm looking forward to the next iMac bump.

iMac's at top end at 1.2 still makes the most sense (for the most expensive model with superdrive and all the new technologies (800, Bluetooth, Extreme, faster DDR).

Price drops most probably will incude a $999 base model, up to a $1,699 at 1.2 GHz with Superdrive.

The imac will get 1Ghz, I think. To avoid shortage, i think that they have made the powermac 1Ghz single processor again.

Could not find any other reason to drop the all dual G4 powermac policy.

When looking over the specs of the powermac line, they screwed a lot of things back. Like the HD, DDR Memory, no superdrive on the dual 1,25ghz. I can see why they can lower the prices on those things.

Still not happy though with today's update.

I will burn a candle for the 970 to come along with the next rev.

But hey, maybe it's just me.

Yeah, I think many a Mac user wants the 970. But at least now it looks like we'll get our 'G5' in September.

This update kinda says 'over and out' for the G4 in 'power'Macs. It would be great to instead see 1 gig to 1.4 gig G4s in a fall iMac2 update.

For now? Kudos to Apple for dropping the price. If we want the superdrive...then pay for it seems fair. And Apple's top end for £2K inc VAT?

That is...well, it is amazing in terms of Apple-ness.

Though I'd rather save my pennies for Mr. You-know-what.

perhaps the iMacs get no update until the 'power'macs arrive. isn't this some sort of record for longest computer line currently sold with no update?

No duals. I doubt they'll have room. The iMac will have a 1 GHz G4 without and backside L3 cache. The primary separator between Pro and Consumer machines. Everything else will be pretty much identical except for the aforementioned L3 cache, 2 DDR SDRAM slots, 4 PCI slots, 1 Firewire 400 port, and other little things. A Superdrive iMac will probably cost 1800 to 2000 $ too.

I'm guessing that this means an iMac price reduction. For casual, home users, the current iMac is way more than 'fast enough'. How much quicker can someone do online banking, use mapquest, or send eMail to their kids?

While there are people who won't buy an iMac because they're too slow. I suspect there are far more who would buy iMacs if they were cheaper.

I believe the new 1Ghz PM is simply a loss leader so they can say they have a Ghz "pro" machine under $1500.

Apple likely hopes that most people will buy the high-end iMac or the dual-1.2 PMs; they likely have better margins on those two.

What about the G3 GOBI? Or does Apple know that would inspire far too much rage from the Mac faithful?

apple's problem is cost and perceived performance.

apple shouldnt give a **** if the lowend powermac is just 1Ghz.... it has features that the imac cant touch.

iMacs should have 1.25 and 1.42 Ghz G4s.

    its needed. ship the fastest.

i dont want to see an iMac at less than 1Ghz... it's 2003.... lets move on already.

My gawd some of you need to be beaten over the head with a reasoning stick. Only in the mac world could anyone in their right mind call a 1500USD machine **sans MONITOR** a LOSS LEADER. Your loss leadercertainly costs Apple no more than 1000USD. At a 1000 they'd probably still be making money on it, only just, but there.

AS for the iMac, a dirty little non-secret (to anyone who was paying attention throughout 2002) of Apple's price bumping fiasco is that production costs (based on rapid and dramatic component price drops) for that machine fell substantially only about 60 days after Apple bumped up prices and continued to fall throughout the year. The margin on iMacs is nowhere near slim, it's gross. Nothing Apple is selling right now in iMac line deserves to be more than 1500USD.

    I wouldn't complain.

But then, Bodhi has already mentioned a large customer who bought iMacs instead of PowerMacs - late last year, even after the lack of updates - just because they figured it wasn't that much slower, and it was that much cheaper. An iMac with high-clocked chips - yes, even with dual processors, even without L3 cache - will essentially become a successful Cube, and cannibalize pro sales.

It might also raise the price somewhat, since cost does not scale linearly with clock speed.

It is amazing how expensive the iMacs are now relative to the Powermacs. I can't image too many people buying one now until they are updated.

I wonder why Apple doesn't lower the price of the iMacs to clear out inventory. It seems ridiculous to keep them at their current prices and then next week (?) offer faster machines for less money. I think one of the reasons people get mad at Apple is their hardware takes large price/performance steps instead of small ones.

I totally agree. Gateway is selling their high-end all-in-one Profile machines with P4 2.6 GHz processers, combo drives, 512 MB RAM, 80GB HD, 17" flat panel display, etc etc for around $1800. These machines, by any measure, blow away any current iMac (yes, it's true).

So Apple needs to give us EVERYTHING in the new iMac (1.25 SP, L3, DDR RAM, 167 MHz Bus etc) if the iMac is going to be competitive. They were stupid to give the low-end Powermac a 1 GHz SP -- the DP and extra expandability could have been the things that separated the iMac line from the PowerMac line.
