Since the displays got this huge price reduction, imagine the iMac prices!

Especially with the "very affordable" rumors there has been..

Yeah, baby. Give it to me!

I'm hoping for two 867 mhz G4 iMac2s under the grand bracket.

Two 1 giggers over. With the 1 gig 'high end' at £1350 tops.

15 inch entry level iMac2 for £850 inc VAT? That would be good. £795 inc VAT? I'd begin to crack and sweat... (They can sell an iBook for £795 inc VAT. I'm getting nervous as to what they'll do for the iMac!!!)

£999 inc VAT? 17 incher. Now. That'd would be more like it. Very tempting...

considering how much the 23" display dropped in price (US$1500 drop?!?!), they must have gotten quite a deal from their distributers, or they're taking a hit on them to get them in the market, or the overall cost of production has dropped due to increased demand.

either way, i expect now that 17" to be standard across the line, with entry-level at US$999 (believe it), 867 MHz G4. and the high-end being a 1 GHz plus better graphics and larger hard drive (80 GB?).

Suddenly a 20" widescreen iMac doesn't seem so unreasonable, does it? 1299 for Apple's panel. slightly larger 1600x1200 panels will be 999 by the end of the year. The 20 probably costs them 800-900 bucks to make right now and will fall drastically within 12 months. The base of an iMac certainly isn't worth more than 1000 retail -- and if not for the superdrive, no more than 750. Apple can easily throw it together for 500-600 bucks. At 1999, given the cost of RAM, dirt cheap PPC's, and HD's, and the likely cost of making a 20" panel, such a super-iMac would carry a neat $300-500USD profit margin climbing steadily throughout the year.

    Entry iMac - 15" - $999

    Better - 17" - $1299

    Even Better- 17" - $1599

    Loaded - 17" - $1899

We'll know soon. And while we're at it:

    iPod - 5 Gig - $199 (all plastic body)

    iPod - 10 Gig - $299

    iPod - 20 Gig - $399

    iPod - 40 Gig - $499

    Matsu,

You're talking about product costs. There are others: advetising, distribution, overhead. All have to be added to the actual total cost. By the way, Apple "doesn't make" LCDs.

    23 inch iMac.

    Hell. I want a 20 incher.

Kudos to Apple. Laptops. Blown me away. Displays? I'm amazed! Great price drops on 'power'Macs and...imacs appending!

    iMac2. Priced to go.

This is more like it Apple. It augers well for 2003!!! I hope they can keep on this aggressive curve to grow their installed base and keep the 'power'Mac prices when they go to the 970.

You know what I mean, they make the 20", ie contract someone to slap glass in a case of their design to their specs.

A 20" iMac is more than possible. Everything else they sell has the same costs you mention, many of hem fixed regardless of component costs (warehouse, shipping)

Any way you wanna slice it a 20" widescreen iMac is now doable for 2K. And while margins would be thin at first they will climb steadily and dramatically as LCD and drive prices continue a rapid fall throughout 2003. I don't think they wanna be in a situation to do price bumps again, but I expectthis machine no later than MWNY. It's an AIO I'd even consider buying.

I have a great idea for Apple:

Keep hardware. Drop dramatically eMac/iMac prices and add Office X. Make great bundle with software.

Biggest problem with Apple is price. Now eMac or iMac (lcd) is enough fast for light OS X using. Why not just drop price a lot and add Office X? Most people just need basic computer for daily work like office, email and www.

According to MacRumors' sources... yes to pricedrops.

it also says the top end iMac will be $1799. Same place it said new machines to be released Jan 28th.

can it also mean the death of the eMac?

If the price drops are anywhere near as dramatic as the LCD or 'power'Mac price drops...then maybe.

I'd like to see the eMac replaced with a headless cheapo iCube.

The eMac styling isn't quite there for me. As a machine, it's in the shadow of the iMac2. It's what many thought a '17 inch' iMac would be. The reality of that turned out to be disappointing.

It would be hard to buy an eMac if the iMac2's pricecut is compelling.

The eMac isn't as cool as the iMac, but it is a nice machine. I use them frequently at my school's computer lab. My only gripe is the horrible refresh rate of the monitor at 1280/1024. I think Apple is criplling it on purpose to make the iMac more attractive. it realy should have a refresh of 85hz or better. If they fixed the monitor, and dropped the price to $799, they would have a winner:

    800mhz G4 133mhz bus

    256mb PC133

    32mb geforce2 or Radeon 7500

    40gig hard drive

    Combo Drive

    included stand

Available in white, and an all black model

    $799

Apple's prices would be good if what they are selling is worth the price. But right now that is simply not the case. Even after the tower updates yesterday, I mean yeah they got faster but they arent where they need to be. Hell no.

You're right. Apple, cpu/bus wise are not where they need to be. But the new aggressive pricing is born of necessity due to languishing specs in their pro line. I'll exempt the Powerbook from that criticism.

But at least now Apple are doing what they can about it. Deep price cuts. Amazing price drops on the monitor range. This makes a 'power'Mac/LCD bundle look really nice. £3 and a half grand for a top of the range 'power'Mac and a 23 inch LCD?

    Not bad.

But the 970 will make it look really cutting edge. Apple's monitors are now bleeding edge. The 'power'Macs are heading in the right direction and the iMac2s? More price cuts. And deep ones. It'll put the iMac2 back on the sales map..and more importantly, in the reach of those switchers!!! It's THE switch machine and should be priced accordingly. Priced to go.

    As for the eMac? Hmmm.

If they can lop a couple of hundred off the price then it would make an okay edu' machine. I'd still prefer that iCube. Cheaper to make. Just a white plastic box which is big enough to take standard components. And loose all the acrylic skirt and chrome grill crap. A limited but competant performer would do silence the 'Macs cost too much' crowd.
