[quote] The new iMac would shock people if it cost $899. Oh man that would be a trojan horse into the PC market.

That's what Apple really, REALLY needs. A 'trojan horse' into the PC market.
If they could deliver prices cuts of the same magnitude which were applied to the LCD range of displays..., Apple's stores would pitchforked by a wild mob of torch bearing switchers.
They have 52 and counting stores to really 'go for it' with a 'trojan' iMac2.
I guess we'll know if they 'dare' in the next few days?
"During the Christmas buying season, we found many customers bringing in ads from competitors literally comparing system prices and features," said one unnamed source who works at an Apple retail Store. "This was reported back to corporate, and they decided this was becoming more of a factor we had to address to continue gaining 'switchers'."
Long time lurker, first time poster. Read everyday, finally found something I feel like I MUST post on.....
I agree that the iMac price drops need to happen, and I hope they happen, and there is a good chance that it may happen, but lets compare the new PowerMacs to the current iMac's first (high end iMac)
iMac
800 Mhz G4 (no L3 cache)
100 Mhz bus
256 megs ram
80 Gig HD
GeForce 4 MX (64 meg)
17" LCD
Superdrive
$1999
So, now configure a new PowerMac to be similar:
PowerMac
1 Ghz G4 (1 Meg L3 cache)
133 Mhz bus
256 Megs Ram (yeah, it's DDR, sorta.... )
80 Gig HD
GeForce 4 MX (64 meg)
17" LCD
Superdrive
$2423
So, looking at that, tell me how they can get a 1 Ghz or more iMac, with specs that may be better then the low end powermac (except for bus, ram, and pci slots) and have it be $700-800 less then the PowerMac. It will further cannabalize PowerMac sales.....
It needs to happen, I just don't see how. A $1699 1 Ghz iMac with 17" LCD is the same price as the low end tower WITHOUT the display!!!!
I know bus speed, PCI expandability, and DDR ram add value, but do they add up to more value then a 17" LCD??
If they had left the low end tower a dual processor system, then the argument is over. That adds enough to be worth it. But as is, if they do this, you can kiss low end tower sales goodbye.
I can't wait for the 970. I hate feeling like Apple doesn't care about the pro machines anymore....
I just took a screenshot of the apple store pricing for imacs, so i can compare later. seriously, apple has to do something about pricing for the imacs. take the high-end imac, put in 512 mb of ram, airport card and 3-yr applcare warranty.
now take that sum, and see what you can get in the towers. admittedly, you have to supply your own monitor, but you can get a really cheap 17" or 19", and have a BEAST of a computer (and upgradeable, too) for the same price as the high-end imac.
the 17" imacs are selling too well for them to keep the 15" around (plus, with the recent price cuts, the lcd can't be that expensive anymore). so 17" across the board. i would like to see something a bit better than the geforce 4 mx in there. hell, halo and doom iii are coming out for mac this year, and i will NOT buy a computer that can't run 'em.
low end imac, US$999. high-end, US$1599. 867 mhz and 1 ghz models, bluetooth and airport extreme optional on the lower ends, included on the high-end. emacs same specs, but dropping to US$699 and $899 for 700 and 800 mhz models.
suddenly, computer labs with emacs look awfully tempting.
Comments
If it's £795 inc VAT (under the $999 range). I may lose it.
If they can get the ibook that low then why not the iMac 2. Bare bones an' all.

I suppose I could always try to unload on eBay, but I have sentimental feelings about letting this thing go.
Besides, I think it may be a keeper...kinda of the the original 128K Mac.

maybe I've no humor but there is a difference of $171,77
between the 17" SD. That's a lot.

Talk about aggressive pricing...yeah...but that's what I think Apple needs to do more of in all of it's product lines.
A $1699 1 Ghz iMac with 17" LCD is the same price as the low end tower WITHOUT the display!!!!

No the Gig Tower is $1499.
And like you said you need to buy a display.
If you choose a Sweet 17", it's $2198.
A lot of people - me first - will buy a iMac 17 for $1699 without thinking (or maybe a bit) because of it's value.
I you want upgradability (PCI, HD, etc.) take the tower.
It can be $1899... but this is the old Apple.
Switcher want cheap Mac.
Either I get a 17" iMac, or a DIY Win/AMD computer.
Barto
The iMac G3 will be around until July.

I very seriously doubt that Apple will keep the iMac G4 15". Can I be that out of touch?

But, to match the iMac you have to add a superdrive and 80 gig HD. That's another $280....
Now, your at 2400+, instead of $1699. That's a $700 difference for a fairly comperable machine...
Is it me or does this NOT signify a price cut in the iMac line?
Hell, the lowend is $1199 right now.
