In the next couple of months they'll have 80GB competition complete with an SATA bus.

    From where?

I can't find the linky right now but it's in a thread either here or at MacNN.

It seems to me that the higher the densities go the more reliable they should become due to less rotation need to read or write the same amount of data. "Seek" times might still be tricky and a badly fragmented drive might lead to problems quicker (more spinning about) I dunno if they'll ever go into laptops though. 2.5" is pretty small. If 1.8 can get up to 80GB, then 2.5" drives will be brushing 200GB in 6-9 months.

Uh...The denser the platters, the more fragile they become...and the more available sectors to go bad. The 80 MB HDD in my LC III is still ticking while my modern IBM and Maxtor drives are dying within 1 year of use...I wonder why?

There is that to consider too. I think the mechanicals would be less at risk though, because of less overall spinning (at least in an iPod like application). However, yeah, you're probably right about the surface of the platters. I thought people were initially worried about the motor/bearings in these little drives burning themselves out and note bad sectors and such?

I would assume that tolerances and reliability improve alongside the advancements that make higher densities possible. The shock rating of the 1.8" seemed pretty high according to Toshiba's web page.

    OH, here's the link to 40GB 1.8" from hitachi, <a href="http://www.hgst.com/about/news/20030106-2.html"; target="_blank">20GB and 40GB 1.8" drives</a>

These are ATA100, but there was a news bit with a Hitachi spokeperson saying he expected to have 40 and 80GB versions with an SATA conector in '03.

At 7 and 9.5mm (1 and 2 platters) they look pretty small, the 20GB version being thinner than Toshiba's (8mm)

The 80GB SATA link is around here somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

The bearings really aren't something people worry about, but the servo is probably the next most likely part to fail other than the disk surface and head / actuator arm.

ok this brings up a good point - when o when will there be a non-mechanical replacement for the hard drive? and whatever happened to the terrastore magneto optical hard drive that was supposed to hold like 1 TByte or something? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    Did anyone else notice <a href="http://www.macminute.com/2003/01/27/osbourneosmond"; target="_blank">this</a>?

I thought it was a little strange, but probably just a typo. But if the 40GB drives are really that close, then could Apple give out exclusive iPods to some folks?

    Probably just a typo ...

Wow, does anybody really need to carry 8000 songs with him wherever he goes?? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I think these could make a great addition to a digital still camera with a limited video funtion. With a bigger buffer you could just capture thousands of RAW image files at a pretty fast clip. No need to process, just store and keep going. Process later, when the action stops.

So every time a new HD comes out that's the size of the iPod's, then we'll assume that means a new iPod soon? So in 2 years we'll have topics that there's a new iPod coming because a 180g HD is coming out? I don't have that many graphic files, let alone mp3s.

    no

but i'm sure i'm not alone in the frustration of wanting to listen to a track that lives on the iTunes perma-collection but wasn't loaded onto the ipod due to space constraints.

i have about 60-ish gig of music and would LOVE to be able to fit that in my pocket to access any song at any time.

    but maybe i'm just greedy

I use my iPod in my car, while I exercise, at work, walking around campus, basically everywhere including at home.

I never know when the mood to listen to a certain type of music will strike me. Having all of my music at my fingertips when I want to hear it is what drew me to the iPod.

I couldn't imagine being limited to just a few CDs worth of music again. It would be too nerve-wracking trying to figure out what to bring along now that I've lived with most of my music at hand no matter where I am.

Besides, just because you don't find it necessary doesn't negate it's benefits for other people. I mean, supposedly we were never going to need more than 640K of RAM according to a certain someone.

    5 gigs is too much.

    80 gigs isn't enough.

That's just the way it works. Currently I could fit my collection on an 80 gig iPod and I love the thought of having a backup copy of my entire iTunes collection. I'll be growing out of the 80 gigs soon too though.

And a three month supply of songs is just right for someone going to college among other things.

Yes, I want a 180g iPod with video out to a monocle which could clip to my glasses for viewing. Better yet I'd like digital glasses which I could pug into my 180g iPod so I could view my porn collection in its full glory whilst listening to my entire iTunes library. This could be the melding of all the iLife applications into one cohesive digital device.

Yep, once again porn can be the driving force behind the tech sector!! <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

sounds great! although i expect your porn collection would just be part of an iphoto showreel

or by then maybe it'd be an idvd show derivitive - idvd: export to ipod...

and also by then, the iPod will have <a href="http://www.googiedrives.com/orbit/"; target="_blank">this</a> sort of storage (in your pocket
