NYT Circuits: O.L.E.D's And The Future.

The New York Times has a weekly section called Circuits. In Circuits I read an article about organic light emitting diodes. The future of such display technology seems amazing. It will be possible in maybe 5 years to have a display that you can roll up and place into your pocket, weighing ounces, not pounds like LCD's. The point of the article was to announce the new discovery in the field: An OLED can produce 2 main colors instead of just one, simply by reversing the current of electrical flow through the LED.

Pretty awesome stuff, the year of the notebook, 2005?. Why not make 2005 the year of the pocketbook?

I am getting vclemped, discuss.

Four years ago, they said, "OLEDs in 2 years!"

Two years ago, they said, "OLEDS in 2 years!"

Now it's five. The problem that needs to be resolved is that the color blue burns out much faster than the other colors.

Feh. You are getting hyped over nothing right now.

    By the way...2003 + 5 = 2008.

Oh...one more thing...feklempt is a more accurate transliteration of the Yiddish word.

My oh my, you are right. I said 2005 but that's not because I can't do the math it is because the article said 2-5 years. Oops.

arstechnica talked about the 2-way OLEDs. Higher density=good. Less diodes for same resolution=cheaper=good. New discoveries are always a good thing. I think.

I read the article, it is interesting how they apply the OLED, by using a special ink jet printer.. or a film... and then you could possibly just roll up your display...

    It is a great idea, I hope the research continues and apple could do something mega cool with it, some how! <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

Anandtech just had a review of a Samsung LCD along with some questions asked of Samsung by their readership. Apparently, Samsung, the, I believe, largest producer of LCDs, is not planning on researching OLED technology. They had done a little research at one point, but no longer.
