Dot Mac Clone...

I want to be able to have all the avantages of Dot Mac but using my own server. I don't want to have to pay Apple for hosting my pages when I already have my own server. I like the way all of Apple's apps integrate with .Mac but don't like the fact you need to purchase the service exclusively from them.

Is there a way to create a Dot Mac Clone? Can these functions be reversed engineered? I'm guessing this would be an open source free software project? I have small funds to assist if needed.

Any ideas/thoughts to help me kick this off?

I have started a wiki page here:

Here's a link to an article from O'Reilly about creating a .Mac type server on your own Mac OS X box. I'm not sure how it'd work on other OSes, but this might help get you started.

Isn't .Mac just an elaborate installation of WebDAV and WebObjects combined?

From what I gathered from the article, it's just WebDAV, plus WO to run all the other stuff (web mail, user spaces, etc.). Basically, if all you needed were web mail and the iDrive, you can very easily do that with OS X.
