Apple to Use Satellite Networks for Movie Store

As a followup to his first editorial which showed that Apple and Sony were working together on a high definition Movie download store, Kelly McNeill submitted the following editorial contribution so osOpinion/osViews which shows that the means for distribution will not be by way of the Internet as previously thought, but by Satelite networks.

While at least *SOME* cable networks are still a possibility for Apple, Microsoft's investments into cable over the past few years will keep the cable companies from distributing DV content in an open standard (MPEG4) but restrict the cable companies to Microsoft's Windows Media format. As a result, this left an open door for satellite network's to standardize on the open MPEG4 AVC standard, otherwise known as H.264, and for Apple to capitalize on it.

Why would Sony help Apple with a Movie store? They both hate each other in the Digital Music Service

Because Sony President Kunitake Ando said he loves Apple's software. Perhaps Apple would create teh software and Sony would create the hardware.

Won't happen like that. Apple is first and foremost a hardware company.

Apple would be seeling more wireless networking devices as the article talks about... and maybe also a satelite entana. (It doesn't have to be a dish... maybe it would be like the XM/sirius satelite receivers.

The problem with both this and the Cringley article is that neither author can explain why Sony would play along compellingly. None of it adds up IMO. It's based on wishful thinking and emotional arguments, not serious analysis. It's not enough that Sony likes Apple's software. Sony would sooner try to roll their own rip-off. Sony has their hands in a lot of pockets, lots of things they offer to lots of people for lots of reasons both to consumers and to the content providers. They have tons of resources of their own, and can, at times, produce their own compelling end-to-end solutions.

Apple's iTMS model is based on the iPod providing enough revenue to justify the venture, and the iTMS helps make the iPod compelling. The software drives the hardware. The hardware brings in the substantial revenue. It seems reasonable to think that the pricing structure of any movie store would leave Apple with enough loose change to cover the cost of the operation itself, but nothing beyond that, just like the iTMS. Apple would use the movie store to make their (hypothetical) hardware compelling, just like the iTMS does for iPods. So Sony can't be the ones doing the hardware because the substantial part of Apple's revenue model would be cut off from them.

Apple could partner with some satellite service, but depending on how it's done, they might not control the delivery of content, something which is essential to make the iTMS viable WRT their DRM, keeping costs down, etc. That's why IP is so attractive.

To save you the time reading the "editorial" yourself, the author clearly identifies it as "speculation." That is a euphemism for WAG.

Do you think that Apple actually makes their hardware though? No! Do you think Apple actually designed the G5 Processor? No! It would be the same with Sony: made by them, branded by Apple.

Hehe... good to see some Sat technology talked about

http://www.eutelsat.net/ then select "Secure Data Broadcast"

    Easy, secure, incredibly cost efficient.

I use it every day... as do over 20,000 people that use my service

Since when has the CPU been the entirely of the machine? All of the internals of their computers come from others, but they don't add up to a Mac piecemeal either. It's like saying that Sony makes Nikon digicams because Nikons use Sony sensors.
