well since apple seems to be updating all of the things witch have not been updated in a while so, i say the next logical thing to update would be the *cough* ipod, but what do you think is next, and what will happen? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    Updated iPods for $199 US?

I live in Canada, and spending $479 CDN for a 5GB iPod, is just insane. I don't care how fast it moves the songs to and from the computer.

The iPod seriously needs to come down in price.

anyone recall when the eMacs were announced? seems like it was last May, but i can't be sure. and i remember that it hit all of us from left field. i'm just saying there might be some other surprise in the coming months that we don't even see on the radar.

ipods could stand to come down in price a bit. honestly, i just wouldn't use a 40 gb version, but i'll bet a bunch of people would, so...

i am not sure what they are doing with the ibooks anymore. my guess is that, with all the education-aimed initiatives witht he ibooks, that they get updated and rebranded the ebooks (so long as they can get around that little copyright) to go with the emacs. still available to the public, but super-cheap to school districts in large quantities. i dunno. just a guess.

Lowering price on a product that sells as well as the iPod is just plain stupid.

Lower the price and more iPods would sell.

Come on, $499 for a MP3 player is INSANE!

Pricing is more complicated than that.

One consideration - and only one of several - is that if you cut the price, sales have to rise by the amount of the decrease in profit. If Apple makes $100 per iPod, and they cut the price by $50, they have to sell twice as many. Would a $50 cut sell twice as many iPods?

You say so, and yet iPod promptly took over the #1 spot in sales at that price point.

Jesus H. Christ, folks! Did you all fail econ? Equilibrium price! That's the big fúcking key! Maybe you can't afford one, God knows I can't, but Apple is raking in big profits at that price point. Sure, they could sell more if they gave them away at cost, but moving product and making money are two different things, and it's all about the money.

They are waiting on the 970. It will appear in the Xserves before anything else, wouldn't you think?

I think a 15 inch PowerBook will show up 3 weeks after the 17" is in stores.

Doesn't Canada have an extremely high tarrif on digital media that can be used to copy music? And if so, wouldn't it affect the iPod?

I read an article a while ago talking about that, but haven't seen anything on it yet.

    &lt;crossing my fingers&gt;

Man, sometimes it just sucks living up here.

well my guess is that the new chip will definently appear first in the xserve since it is their main company product. the ipod should come down in price too.

Apple's riding on high holiday sales with the iPod, but as more competitors come out that are more attractive, eventually they'll have to lower prices in order to generate enough sales. A $200 or $250 model might not be necessary yet, but it will be soon... I mean, you can get a portable 20 GB unit for $300. Sure, it's not an iPod, but many people would gladly go lower-end if they can get all the storage of the top-end iPod for $200 less.

I don't think the Xserve is the "main company product" at all. First of all, it appeals to a very specialized market. Also, it hasn't been updated in almost a year, though that doesn't matter nearly as much with servers. Finally, it's still running at 1 GHz (single or dual) while the PowerMac runs at up to 1.42 GHz. The PowerMac seems like the standard Apple machine for professionals, but I'm sure the iMac is the best recognized. So either one of those could be the "main company product."

Besides the ones already mentioned (iPOd, xServe), i think ther are two products clearly left behind in the recent updates: the 15" Titanium Powerbook and the 15" iMac.

It seems to me that these two products are still in the line-up to clear out existing inventory of models and parts. First I expect the 15" Powerbook to be updated to a aluminum shell and features like the 17" (e.g. DDR, bluetooth, Airport Extreme) in within 4 to 6 weeks. Second I think the 15" iMac will be replaced by en newer model receiving the same features as the 17" model, just with a lower clock speed. If faster PowerMacs have been introduced bij then, the top model will probably get 1.25MHz and the 15" will get 1GHz.

sorry, but the 15" imac has been "updated" 700Mhz -&gt; 800Mhz; 128mb ram -&gt; 256mb ram; cd-rw -&gt; combo; 40gb hd -&gt; 60gb hd and the addition of apple pro speakers for the same price (in the netherlands at least). it's the best selling 15" imac configuration so it can't be "clearing inventory" because it could have been cleared already (as best selling 15" imac)

the titanium has just been updated 3 months ago. so in this case it's no "clearing existing inventory" eighter.

you forgot the ibook, as matsu mentioned in another thread, things had to change to differentiate it more from the powerbook line up. the formfactor has been about 2 years old now. (but also is extremely succesfull)

we'll see it in about 2-3 months.

    just wait

edit; sorry, i meant most expensive product, therefore the easiest to put a new chip in (guessing)

The Xserve will most definitely NOT be the first machine to get the 970 simply because by it's very nature, the Xserve needs a stable and reliable architecture. You need to use chips and tech that are tried and tested and work like a charm. At most they will use a tweaked 970 mobo allowing them to use all the new features and still use the trusty G4 chip, even tho it is (much) slower than the 970.

I also believe that we will not see a split PM scenario (G4 + 970) simply because Apple would want to move away from the suicidal G4 ASAP! I reckon they will shove as many 970s into a box as they can and pretend the G4 never happened. They will offer the G4 as a consumer chip until the 970+ or IBM's G3 + Altivec is available, then use them.

    peace
