Will Tiger be OS X or OS XI ?

Does anyone know how Apple will name this major update of the OS?

It seems like it deserves a new number but could it just be OS X 10.4?

Any opinions? Has Apple said anything? Will there be a big marketing push?

I'm looking forward to Spotlight searches...

Does the X even really stand for "10?" Why isn't it OS X.3.8? My impression is that the X is for the new Unix-type OS, and the 10 that comes after it is the chronological designation. So in a few years we might have OS X 11.0.

Hmm. Or maybe that would be too strange.

X is 10. To say "x" is actually wrong. You're supposed to say "ten".

    (but who does?)

No, no, ... OS XI will be no more cats, but dinosaurs. OS XI will be called 'raptor'

I can't wait till Apple goes to OS 11.

Get Spinal Tap for the adverts.

"But this one goes to 11."

OS X (10) will be OS X (10) until OS XI (11), which will likely be marketed under an entirely different name: "Utopia" (just my idea).

Only when aqua, etc. completely disappear in favor of a complete overhaul (though not quite as dramatic as the shift from 9 to X) will we see a new naming convention. I'm talking about radical UI changes and adoption of groundbreaking technologies.

There will, therefore, at least be an OS 10.8.8.

    Type the following into Terminal:

    say "Mac OS X"

and hear it from the horse's mouth.

I believe the naming scheme is a bit different than what we had with the Classic Mac OS. In Mac OS X (X being a roman numeral), I take the X or 10 as the overall architecture version, that is, the major version of the kernel and low-lying structure. The next digit, .3 for Panther, .4 for Tiger represents major OS changes on top of that architecture. So the jump from 10.3 to 10.4 is more akin to the jump from System 7 to OS 8. Same basic stuff under the hood, but added to, altered, refined and fixed.

    Once and for all:

Mac Os X is the name of a Platform
