Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
According to MacWhispers for this week:

Very Likely; Ready to Go:

10, 20 & 40GB iPods

15.4" Aluminum PowerBook

Possible, But Not Likely:

Xserve at Dual 1.42GHz

Xserve RAID, FireWire 800

17-inch Cinema Display

Not Likely; Not Ready to Go:

Speedbump eMac

Speedbump iBook

So, whatcha think? I'm not quite sure about some of them, but it'd be cool to see 15.4 Albooks...

It would make sense for them to release it now -- I just got a used 867 TiBook. But I'm not going to give in and sell it right off the bat -- I'm going to use it for a very, very long time. It wouldn't be insane for Apple to actually do this -- think about it, two somewhat-big upgrade annoucements in as many weeks plus a third VERY big upgrade announcement that will put their balance books in a very, very nice position for quite some time. But I WILL be happy with my new TiBook, remembering the days I spent with my Pismo. I WILL not give in to temptations to have the better package. Let's see what next winter brings first.

I'm working on a 667 VGA Tibook that I purchased two weeks before the 800s came out and I think I am due for an upgrade. That would be awesome if we saw a 15 inch Aluminum book this week with all the specs of the 17 inch version. I have been typing in the dark a lot lately and that backlit keyboard would be a godsend. Here's hopin!!!

15.4 Al Books would be great! Hopefully the prices are competitive too and are equipped with good video cards.

Has anyone considered the possibility of Apple retaining the overall Titanium form factor and in fact giving it better specs than the 17", to make it their flagship laptop?

In looking at the Powerbooks, the TiBook is still the best looking of the bunch, and I wonder if Steve is image conscious enough to keep it around.

And why the move to a 15.4"? I don't understand why they would even bother with this. If you look at the three powerbooks now there is a pretty good difference between all three. 12-15 is 3" 15.2-17 is 1.8". Why change that and make the difference between the products even smaller?

Not to mention that the 15.2 barely fits in some bags now. That additional .2" might put it out of a few more.

At 16:10, the 15.4 might end being smaller overall, though a bit wider.

I'm interested in seeing what they do with the 15.4" PowerBooks; after all, I do have a top of the line TiBook.

As of yesterday, Apple denied that the 15" PowerBook would upgraded any time soon to an Aluminum enclosure (as reported by Macworld). Of course they always say this.

I don't think we'll see the 15" updated until the PowerBook 17" at least starts shipping. The 15" could really steal sales away from the larger model, especially if it has Firewire 800, a backlit keyboard, Airport Extreme, Built in Bluetooth, built in SuperDrive, and the same 1 GHz G4.

So I figure that we'll see the 17" AlBook in stores (and in stock) before we see actually see a 15" AlBook. Also remember that the TiBooks are about even 3 1/2 months old. That's an awfully short shelf life, especially for a PowerBook.

The final thing to consider is ship times. The Combo Drive 15" TiBook ships 'the same day' while SuperDrive TiBooks ship 'within 1-2 days'. The last few weeks we've seen a product updated, ship times slipped from 1-2 days to 3-5 days or more. The iMac slipped to 1-2 weeks.

So if we're looking at updates, it seems there is still a lot of inventory in the channel.

Curious. Will this 15.4-inch powerbook have a faster chip in it? They can't make it faster than the 17-inch, can they? Seems to me like they should just wait until the 17-inch has been shipping for awhile and update both of them at the same time. What's the point of releasing another 1GHz PowerBook? Makes no sense to me.

Is it pretty much a done deal that the new 15.4" will lose 54 pixels of vertical resolution from the old 15.2", going from 1280x854 to 1280x800?

If so, why? In order to make it an exact 16:10? In order to use a perhaps more standardized, and therefore cheaper by greater mass production, display?

Those 54 pixels were good Dock space.

I really really hope this is true. I was going to get a 12" PowerBook but a 15.4" AlBook sounds a lot more apealing. Please be true!

has anybody recieved a new ti recently??? I am wondering if they are really shipping same day as quoted on their site...

I am really really excited for the release of the 15.4... I will buy one in a second! I dont think that I could ever have the 17er because it is just too darned big!

A 15.4" screen that looses a few pixels is going to be one of those things where you say, meh. It IS good dock space, but I'm not a resolution fanatic, like some of the people here, I prefer to look at a more ergonomic comprimise rather than as many pixels as possible. Ideally, Apple would have added a few more horizontal pixels rather than taken away vertical ones, but if panels aren't available, they aren't available, not much Apple can do it about it. 1366x854 would have been perfect.

I guess 3:2 is one of those neither here nor there formats and it will be easier in the long run to get either 4:3 or 16:10 glass. HDTV will be 16:9, so 16:10 for a computer diplay is a nice direction, it lets you show the whole frame while it gives a sliver of space for menus, controls etc etc...

I would imagine that Apple is moving to 16:10 on all but the smallest displays -- where a little extra height is actually more ergonomic, less scrolling -- for cost and standardization reasons. If panel makers want to make 16:10, it's better to get on board with a standard now. It should make for a cheaper PB. They still need to get a 15" screen down to 2000 and between a (hopefully) cheaper screen and an easier to make Al chassis, they just might get there. Yes, the 12 needs to get cheaper too, and it easily can, if you see the edu price, you know that Apple can easily sell it 300USD cheaper and still make money. It's 1799 now for a combo, but only 1499 edu. The other models do not have such a large (percentage) edu drop, particularly the Ti's, suggesting that there's something about them that costs a little too much to make -- I'm betting on the screen and the case.

a 16:10 15.4" might also make a good bump to the 15" iMac.

It is indeed a great time to be a Mac fanatic...just wish I had deeper pocketbooks!

I kinda a gree with Fran...I doubt we'lll see a 15.4" AlBook until the behemoth starts shipping. Now the iPod is another story...and I hope they bump more than just the HDD on it or else I won't be upgrading even though I am down to under a gig of space on my 10 giger.

What with the Xserve and Xserve RAID now it appears that Apple spits out new hardware faster than Pentiums can say Uncle.

... meaning, we have a good chance of seeing something shortly (although, having announced the new -15 inch -Powerbooks last December, I don't think an update is slated already).

no new 15.x" powerbook until the other ones get updated. why?

Coz apple wouldn't just give it a new enclosure and some new ports, but the same CPU speed. yet they would likely not give the 15" a faster CPU than the 17". thus well see 1.2-1.42GHz Powerbooks no earlier than May, I'd say.

Pretty safe to say MacWhispers is blindly guessing. No FW800 on the Xserve RAID. No 1.42 GHz in the Xserve.

I'd be happy with a minor (I call it minor) update to the tiBook. Give me ATA/100 and DDR I'd be happy for now. I'd plop down the cash for it tomorrow if they did that and included built-in bluetooth. I think I can wait on Airport Extreme and FW 800 till they bring out the 15" alBook or give it a speed bump/new processor.
