Hello. I am looking for an external dual layer DVD writer for both a 15-inch PowerBook and a Sony laptop. Could anyone help me out here? Preferably, is there an external writer that can be used on a Mac and a PC? Thanks!

your best bet is to buy an enclosure and then buy the burner to put in it

otherwise you'll most likely pay too much

Enclosure? Do you mean by buying a metal casing/holder for putting in internal writers? My another question is, there are dual layer DVD writers for both Mac and PC right?

Meanwhile, here in reality, things are different.

I'm not sure if there are others, but we've at least got the Lacie D2

The new lightscribe from LaCie as well,

this is the Mac/PC bundle with only toast lite.

The Mac bundle is with Toast Titanium and only FW No USB2

yup totally that's why I've managed to copy a large number of DVDs using my LacieD2 and dual-layer disks. Built in drives are single layer but they're not just DVD-R on PowerBooks there DVD±RW. I would recommend the LacieD2 for Mac with Toast 6 titanium included (it works on PCs but doesn't come with software). You'll need software for the PC but which ever way you do it you'll need to buy software for either the Mac or PC. Toast 6 is brilliant and allows sharing of a burner over a network.

Does XP support dual-layer burning natively if so, definitely go for the Mac option.
