WWDC 2003 - Hardware

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
Well it is close to that time of the year and Apple has put up its WWDC website...although it is very bleak. Normally they have a calendar of the week and all the sessions they are going to have, but it does not look like they have that on the webpage this year.

Providing that information in the past has lead to small tidbits of knowledge on what we will see from our favorite fruit company in the near future...

Could something very radical be brewing at the Infinity Loop campus that Apple wants to keep their jaws shut about it?

I am posting this here because I do not want it to sink at the bottom of the General Discussion thread, also this will be specificaly about hardware at WWDC.

This certainly makes sense. The sane expectation is that 970-based Macs will arrive somewhere around September-October. Maybe later, but almost certainly no earlier.

If the 970 goes live in September, then it would be a good idea to let programmers know about it in May, right?

Since the 970 will accellerate even 32 bit apps there is no need to Apple to wait for the 64 bit apps to arrive. I think they will have a 64 bit capable OS with the machines tho. So I agree that May is a good time to let the programmers have a dev kit and other goodies. But I think the machine could be announced in June and get delivered not long after the announcement given IBM's stated timeline of production. Available in 3Q '03, apparently. Good timing considering the recent PM bumps. A range of speeds from 1.2 to 1.8 (or higher) would look like a logical progression. I'd not be surprised if they demo a machine to people who sign NDAs at the WWDC but I don't think they will do a public display. Historically they have waited to sell down inventory before doing intros. Demonstrating publically a 970 at WWDC will put an even greater strain on their ability to sell G4 PMs as people outside the Apple geek community realise there is something *much* better just around the corner.

Well at last count, I see 7487 people expecting "something *much* better just around the corner."

Unless, of course, they really are a few months ahead of schedule.

It is highly unlikely that Apple would announce a Powermac 970 before the 970 is in full-scale production. Apple might have been sent a thousand-odd chips to experiment with, but that too is highly unlikely. And anyway, May is way to early to introduce a new Powermac, because the Powermacs would be shipping at least 4 months from the conference announcement time. Then no one would buy a Powermac for 4 months. Even an Apple PDA is more likely to be announced. Oh, don't I wish...

I would imagine that the best indicator that we will see at WWDC is the anouncement of 64 bit code for OS X. If PM 970's are shown, they probably wont tell anyone what is in them.

Apple has never shown us a product and then refrained from telling us its tech specs...everyone would know that it was the 970 even if they were not told.

thy aren't going to be "announcing" them. Every one in attendance is under NDA. While that doesn't hold up entirely it is a legally binding agreement. In the past Apple jas had closed door preview sessions on G4 and multiprocessing. In both cases the new machines based on that technology were released in the following summer.

I agree, but if you put credence in some of the rumours about things "going well" at IBM.

I don't care what happens, I just want my Powermac 970!

Apple should me more concerned professionals are defecting as of NOW, rather than announcing the 970 ealy and worrying companies will hold off on their purchase plans. Can you spell TOO LATE?

You won't see too many companies Defecting during a slow economy. IT Budgets are scaled back if not frozen in many companies. Any change in Platform is going to come with it's associated costs. 2004 should be the year of recovery(wishing..hoping..praying) Apple should be well prepared.

Apple never puts the tracks up when the announce the next WWDC - I'd expect to see the tracks up sometime in April.

Although I remember one year that we had some 'unannouced' tracks, and track that changed on Monday after the keynote.. (I must be getting old, cause I don't remember what they announced that year).

Didn't SJ say Apple will innovate its way through the slowdown (heck, can't we call it a recession yet?) and emerge stronger for it?

Launch kickass kit just as nobody's spending money, get it sorted out as all the hardcore who've been hoarding their pennies buy 970 machines, then watch the money come in when the economy picks up... sounds like a good business plan to me.

I hope that there is a leak from someone at the May conference...that would tide me over. Maybe someone that goes to the conference takes a picture of a presentation, and then, say, posts it on ,say , Ebay?
