New Orleans not big enough?

Seriously I'd like to know what the hold-up is on placing a store her. Theres a ton of reasons I could state for why we need one here notibly the number of college students, musicians, and movies being made in the area. This place has a cultural pulse that beats louder than most and yet I see apple stores coming up everywhere but here. If I see another obscure store placment I swear I'm gonna....get really mad and post here again I guess. What the hell?

I've watched Apple's retail effort for a while now and this is something that has me scratching my head. Of course, so did the lack of a store in Nashville and they've finally got around to doing something about that. I can only believe Apple is waiting for the perfect location to open up. No openings in the Riverwalk mall yet?

Man... I have to totally agree... this is ridiculous.

There are no frickin Apple stores within 3 states of me.. (I am in Mississippi)

I keep hoping for one to open in N.O... at least then there would be a place for me to buy apple stuff, and it would only be an hour drive...

Otherwise, the internet is all there is.. There is literally no computer stores here, let alone ones that sell Apple stuff.

Come on, Apple... we may just be dumb rednecks down here in the south, but we do buy computers!

I don't know what part of Mississippi you are in, but there have rumors for quite a while about a store possibly going into Spanish Fort, near Mobile. It looks like any plans were put on hold, but it is still the best bet for a store close to Southern Mississippi.

Apple has been obsessive about waiting for exactly the right place to open up. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were in a holding pattern in New Orleans, waiting for the Perfect Retail Space.

If they were to open a store in New Orleans, where would you picture it landing? Apple tends to locate stores prominently in heavily trafficked, upscale shopping centers. Are there any open spaces in those locations that Apple could nab?

I think your are directing your question at Playmaker and not me, but the reason I mentioned the Riverwalk mall in my first post is that it meets all the criteria you talk about. It is also owned by General Growth Properties; a company that has many Apple stores in its malls throughout the US.

I think that it's a possibility, however the Riverwalk while receiving heavy traffic is prodominantly a tourist mall. That being said it's possible that this is exactly the type of place they are looking for. I would think that Apple would be better suited in the Canal Place mall across the street. Canal Place is on the corner of South Peters and Canal Street and receives some of the heaviest traffic in the city. Additionally it caters to a sort of higher-end clientelle (Banana Republic, Gucci, Pottery Barn, and Sak's 5th ave. are some of the stores located there). This is also the prime location for people to see if they are headed to the French Quarter or Bourbon St.

I had not heard of the rumors of a Mobile Apple Store...

Although, since I often go into Mobile for work reasons, I would be thrilled if that rumor came to fruition.

Either or... New Orleans or Mobile... I am smack-dam in the middle of them both... an hour drive each way.

JUST GIVE ME SOMEWHERE I CAN LOOK/TOUCH APPLE PRODUCTS!!

(I am a southern transplant from Orange County California, so I have been used to being in the thick of everything tech related, and now I find myself in the thick of nothing tech-related - unless you consider Circuit City to be tech hotbed.. LOL )

I am assuming you are somewhere between Slidell and Biloxi. While this area is a nice place to live you are right about Circuit City being the Technology Mecca in that general area.

yep... I am in the outskirts of Biloxi.

I love most facets of living here, except for the lack of consumer technology. Believe it or not, we are actually way ahead in tech matters for most things... video based arraignments in our courts, video feeds of our public schools, the casinos here are using state-of-the-art tech that often gets "tested" here before it gets use in Vegas, etc...

And yet, the most advanced tech place for a consumer is Circuit City.

    Bah!

Playmaker, I assume you are in NO?

[edit] I just read your location thingy.. nevermind... you downtown or across the bridge, or ?

There's an Apple Store in Germantown (just south of Memphis). There is an Apple Store in Dallas. I can understand if you don't want to drive all the way from where you are (Hattiesburg? Biloxi?) to Memphis, since I-55 sucks, but hell, when I was in college at USM, I sometimes made a beer run to Dallas!

The Wife and I actually live in LaPlace which is about 20 minutes west of the city and where I55 starts (not sure if you are familiar), but I drive into town for work every day. It's also just easier to tell people I'm located in N.O. rather than explaining the location of the Suburb.

riverwalk mall is a very tourist-oriented mall, with much smaller spaces, with the exception of the gap, the limted, and, um... well, those are the largest places. everythign else is mini-store sized.

the esplanade is upscale and its interior design reminds me of apple's store design, BUT it is not in an area where i would expect a lot of high-end computer passerby traffic (metairie).

canal place certainly counts, BUT i swear i feel it has less visibility than any other mall, and it's smack dab int he middle of downtown. i forget it's even there unless i am driving around the superdome and then i'm like, "oh yeah, i keep forgetting that mall exists!"

lakeside mall gets far too much high-school mallrat traffic, but they have drastically upgraded their tenant quality lately.

the northshore malls, right now, are a joke, except not funny ones. supposedly they are building the "largest mall in the state" near where i live, but i don't even think they have broken ground yet. they are doing so to take advantage of the MASSIVE population boom the northshore has gotten recently, and there is a lot of money up here, too.

personally, i would rather they pick a downtown spot, as they will get a lot of foot traffic from the design/art district.
