this is really exciting, altho i've got my guard up waiting for a 2.8 dual top of the line machine with the same basic config as the old ones. I am loosing faith! ("faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen") I have 8K to spend on my new workstation including a 30" display. I will use this machine for 3 years, so I'm believing for a killer update, as whatever the next bump is, thats my machine.

This is fucking brilliant! Finally Apple has a shot at being the first to the market with a new CPU innovation.
To think that only a few years ago, Apple was Motorola's bitch and tales circulated of Steve Jobs throwing his phone across the room when speaking with Moto execs.

Remember the aRTiCa SoC? It also hinted at a dual dual-core PowerMac.
That was just pure unadulterated self serving BS based on industry inevitability. Kind of like when the maker of VueScan published VS 5.x would not support G5s about 18 months before G5s were actually announced, only to cash in on rumor monger traffic claiming it was the smoking gun--"He must have a prototype! How else would he know???" BS then BS now.
CHUD however IS a smoking gun. You can bet there won't be any Artica northbridge in a new PM though.

But here's the real question... How will Apple market dual core machines? Do they use the 2x2 moniker or, like Monster, will they just call it a quad? Simplifying dual core for the masses sounds like a good idea. Do the masses understand hyperthreading? I know technical people who don't understand huperthreading!
There is no evidence that symmetric multi-threading (SMT) has been added to the 970MP or it's single core version the 970GX. That is for the PPE and/or ethereal POWER5-Lite cores.
Also logical processors are not sellable as additional capacity as they add no capacity, just an algorithmic way to more effectively use existing capacity. No additional free lunch here. Physical processors are sellable and when you add them you add processing capacity in an unambiguous way.

Don't think it really matters 2x2=4 even for the simpleminded and the performance curves will be close enough for those without very special needs that the differences won't matter. For now SMT isn't an issue, that's still for the future. FYI, hyper-threading is just Intel's trademarked name for it's version of SMT.
Hyperthreaded and Dual Core processors are something entirely different. But hyperthreaded Processors "are not" what's going into the next powerMac. Dual Core may not be in them either for that matter (I think they will though), but dual cores are not the same as hyperthreaded processors. That much I can assure you.

That aRTiCa SoC modular crap was a POS dream of someone's of off sourcing 2 - 16x PCI-E streams to a modular tower to sell SLI on a Mac for a system they imagined would be there some day when apple updated the mobo to use PCI-E, but they thought SLI would not be available. (that's my opinion on why they designed that thing) I myself think Apple just may use SLI technology in a new tower. Although purchasing card two would be a BTO option. (no SLI on a Mac discussions in this thread puleeeeeeze -> Take it to another one)
Maybe people are afraid to submit any legitimate evidence, or anything being that Apple is going to be head hunting soon.
[OT digression] Well, I thought that's was anonymous remailers were for. I have to say I'm shocked that someone working inside Apple _after the whole WorkerBee fiasco (just to add a little AI history into the mix)_ would still consider communicating with a rumour site in such a way that would allow them to be fingered by an ISP/server subpoena.
Of course that avoids the whole issue of Apple wrongfully (IMHO) suing for this information, but regardless, why not take a few simple steps to protect yourself if you're going to go and spout "trade secrets".[/OT digression]
