My sensible brain doubts the truth of this.

But the rest of me enjoys these silly rumours.

But if this were a very light, robust machine with good battery life.

Then it might make a very good product for education. The sort of thing that each student would take home.

ALthough it would be more like the eMate - it might be the replacement for the eMac.

The thing is, if this palmtop were to happen you'd need a better processor than what the iPod currently uses. Is a G3 too much for a device like this one? Then there's the OS. Custom version of MacOSX or some enhanced iPod software or something completely new?

I also don't think phone-like features would be desirable because the form factor gets in the way. The PDA-with-phone-capabilities doesn't work as well as the phones with built-in palmOS like the ones Samsung offers because in essence they're still phones. But Treos are more handhelds than phones and it just doesn't look too elegant. Looks forced and bulky.

Instead of phone capabilities I'd prefer wifi, bluetooth and you can turn your device into a phone/communicator by using some kind of Skype or iChat.

It would have to be more than an iPod with a keyboard. Quicktime compatibility would be a must-have in my opinion along with the wifi and bluetooth to appeal to many... and yes, the Apple iMovie Store, like some suggested.

The only thing that makes me think that there may be a little aspect of truth to this rumor is that the new digital toy division at Apple has to exist for something more than the iPod.

I think if they come out with a smallish OSX device that its main function will be simple, i.e. it is not an iBook. My best guess is that it could be a better version of iPod Photo/video pod.

Powerpage's 'read more' link brings you to a page whose only additional information above that offered by the front page is... an ad.

I don't believe it; not a word of it.

I agree that Apple should make something between the iPod and the iBook. Maybe an iPod photo but with a larger high resolution display of 8" or so. Perfect for whipping out in any convenient location, such as a public bathroom, and viewing porn.

Call it the iMoral to keep the fundagelicals at bay.

...right. I can tell you right now your dead wrong. :-)

there are however sub-portable devices on campus that use some sort of LED (from what i witnessed) setup or low powered image projector. The device would was about an ibook sliced in 1/3rds. It projected i'd say a 3 meter image and was cool to the touch. Had os x running which looked to be built inside the device.

The MAc palmtop is nothing but a foldable screen disguised as a computer but mainly for watching Movies bought from the Movie Store.

Remember Tiger will have H.264 and the market is screaming for downloadable movies.

Just imagine, if this MAc palmtop has NTSC/PAL output it will be the video Player/Recorder/Library of the century.

    Just my 2 cents.

Palmtops are good, but to suceed, apple is going to have to keep it

    a) $500 -$600, stripped model going for under $400

    b) wified

    C) graphiced

    d) better, cheaper and more usable than the OQO, Treo 650, or Tungsten C, T5.

    e) do something remarkable. Apple invented remarkable with the Apple II and the mouse. THIS needs to be as good as that.

Piffle. The iPod is a read-only device. I've heard that you can change the rating of a song which is playing, but other than that, you cannot do any data entry or modification on the iPod at all. You might as well be carrying a brick.

i was simply trying to point out that at the requested price-point in the category "handhelds" apple currently offers the iPod Photo 30Gb. since i don't see how apple is going to add all the functionlity requested while still keeping that price-point, then one would have to assume that this would basically represent the "stripped down version" of a possible "powerPod".

I have seen the future and they're going brushed steel and widescreen on the powerpod.

Oh, sorry I missed your point. So what you're saying is that it would cost more than $399. Yes, that's so. I can't imagine Apple introing anything like this for less than $799 or so anyway.

Apple's been remarkably stubborn at resisting any form of data input on the iPod for all these years; it's unlikely they'll change their mind now.

doesnt meet b c d or e criterium. Sorry, iPod Photo doesn't equal a palm top. sure has cool multimedia bits, and i'm SURE that music sounds better when one can see it, but does not quilify as palmtop.

The guys who started OQO were Apple expats, and as far as I've been told, the "Model 01" has been having some technical issues. If Apple were to make a handheld PC, they would probably just buy back OQO, dump the shitty Transmeta CPU for a PPC, and spend some time resolving the current issues.
