is there a way to get into the system library and change a users' short name?
There is, and it involves using NetInfo Manager but I really discourage that if you don't know what you are doing.
What I would recommend; Create a user with the shortname you want, and transfer the files and settings of the old user over to the new one. Be mindful of applying permissions to all the files and folders. it's best to move the files under the root account and apply permissions down in root.

The CLI or NetInfo is where you want to go. Tread lightly if you are not comfortable. Read Apple's docs first.

Haven't used either and they both seem to get very mixed reviews. So don't blame me if you use them and get SNAFUed.
