I for one LOVE the mechanics of the current enclosure they can 'dress it up' any way they want but the operation of the case as it stands now shouldn't change (unless they have somehow designed something even better ... but frankly I don't see how).
Steve could paint the case pink with purple polk-a-dots for all I care so long as the box has a kickass mobo with one or more 970's on it and said mobo and innards are as easily accessible as todays cases. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Something will HAVE to be different about it. This is the biggest step in Apple's desktop line since the jump to PPC - and Jobs wasn't present for that. Still used ugly beige boxes for that one.
No this one will be different. I am thinking along the lines of the glowing box that was described in the patent filing a few months ago.
No bigger, smaller maybe. El-capitan layout was/is a great design. We'll have to see. Guessing layouts for this is quite hard, as this is one of Apple best depts - physical hardware design!
I think the current structure will stay but the outside will be completely made over. Other then the displays Apple doesn't really use much lucite(sp?) anymore. They are also using a lot more brushed metal, chrome and no aluminum. The chrome is mostly as an accent tho. So I'd expect a metalic type extrior possibly wih metal feet/handles and a guaranteed chrome Apple on the side.
We Jobs likes cubes going all the way back to NeXT. But el cap' really is the best tower case out there ATM. Nice looking, easy access, not too huge but with lots of internal space for drives/cards.
If they made a cube, they could hang the Mobo on a plate int he middle and put all the drives to one side and all the cards to the other 12"^3 ??? mebbe too big? They'd want symmetry too, so under such a scheme, to get the optical bay in the center horizontally, they'd have to split the cube horizontally and put the cards below and the drives above, or vice versa. Isn't 12" cubed too big though? mebbe 11 will do. Looking at the footprint of my PB I figure an approximate cube off this footprint would provide a lot of room and be smaller in two dimensions than a PM, but fatter.
im in a black college and people love my " Chromed out computer. " im the only one with anything like it son everyone in my dorm knows about it. Other college friends think it looks really sweet too. seeing how we are the emerging people and current interns apple should make kewl designs. flower power was not kewl. graphite was kewl. MDD is kewl. its just a nice feeling konwing you are the only on campus who reguraly uses windex on their cpu.
OK, I'm naive and ignorant. I've not seen this one before. Was it presented as a genuine item (real or not) or simply another PhotoShop mockup exercise? i.e. Did the poster claim any "insider" status? I like it (with a few reservations), but if I'm being jerked around I'd like to know...
Very nice, but... Notice the slot loading drive would block half of the top ventilation grille. And that, boys and girls, is why the Cube's drive was vertical.
I would like to see something in XServe design line..

curent powermacs are 'kind of cute'.
Next thing should have that 'wow' factor..
And some of that apple touch would be nice, something like photocell sensor to open up panel with ports when you pause your hand over it.. u know what i mean, one of these 'things'..
That spymac one looks kinda cool and simple, but no way. Far too difficult to work on. Only one optical drive, and a slot loader at that. That would be much better as either a business/school/consumer computer than as a pro machine... it actually looks a bit like those Dell Optiplex desktops, but much nicer of course.
Pros want/need plenty of internal expansion and a rugged design. I think El Cap has proven its worth as a perfect case for a power user.
Not bad, although there are some obvious practical flaws with the design: The optical drive blocking the vent, no spaces in the skirt at the bottom for air intake, and the non-flat faces, which make the various slots and ports impractical.
I prefer the design I came up with in the Cube 2 thread. It relies on modules for expansion, but that's fair. Part of me will be disappointed if the 970 shows up in an El Capitan case. Yes, it's beautiful. No, there are no better minitower cases. But it's still a minitower: Big, boxy and self-contained. I think the new architecture will give us options we've never even considered.
I agree totally. I love the CD players where you wave your hand in front of it and the drawer automatically pops out. There's no reason why towers can't have that, after all even hand dryers in restrooms have motion sensors! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
Such a feature works with Apple's style, something incredibly simple, and very cool, yet nobody has thought of doing it yet. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
I take a cue from the rest of Apple's current product line from the iMac to the Xserve. Each is a very elegant minimalist design. The only exceptions are the recent (and current) MDD G4 towers. Look for that to change when Apple changes processors.
