Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn?t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you?ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95.
what's that you say? oh, right, there's NO BLOODY h.264 HIGH DEF CONTENT OUT YET
That's sort of a chicken vs. egg thing: no one will produce content if end-users can't play it, but no one will create a player because there's no content.
Maybe we'll go a few months or even a year with no real content to view in H.264, but as if/when gains in popularity you'll already have the software to view it, without having to download a bunch of new codecs or whatever.

I dunno, makes sense to me.
if anyone can pump out high-def h.264 content, it will be the movie/video pirates
oh, and probably porn makers
i can encode h.264 with ffmpeg but playback not so good on my iBook g4 933mhz with VLC. i am really curious as to how quicktime 7 and tiger will improve on h.264 playback, i'm gonna start a poll...
people will be archiving their dvds with h.264 soon... instead of divx or avi...

Pfft. I bought my G3/350 with a DVD-ROM back in `99 expecting software to move to DVD delivery. Nice to see Apple finally taking the step.
- Jasen.
(P.S. Of course, my DVD drive died a couple years ago and I replaced it with a CD burner. D'oh! But I just ordered a Pioneer burner from NewEgg for $65, so I'm back up to date - till BluRay takes over. )
I am a NEVER ENDING cycle where a million things keep totally destroying my plans.
I want to upgrade my OS from 10.1 so that some software actually works on it (although I am extremely resentful that I should be forced to when there is no problems with my OS). However there's no point upgrading to 10.3 now so I need to wait for 10.4, however 10.4 requires a DVD drive.. see my later problem
In order to upgrade my OS, I need to back up my hard drive.
In order to back up my hard drive, I need a DVD writer.
In order to get an all format external dvd writer (that does DVD RAM) I I need to have OS 10.3 (at least). I want one that does DVD RAM.
I have no hard drive space left, I want a 400gb hard drive
400gb hard drives are perhaps unreliable as yet, but I don't want anything less
If I'm upgrading my hard drive I should upgrade my OS to 10.4.. see previous problems..
So, I need to upgrade my OS in line with getting a new hard drive, in order to upgrade my OS I need to back up stuff on DVD, in order to get a decent dvd writer I need to upgrade my OS, in order to use 10.4 I need a DVD drive.. and plus, a 400gb hd might not even be reliable!
Gah, if I hadn't spent a lot of money on this thing (iMac G3) and if I didn't hate Windows so much, I'd get a PC because I'm sick of this crap with Os upgrade requirements. Just doing simple things ends up being impossible. Had I a PC I could just buy two 200gb hard drives and run them together but you can't even do that on an iMac. Had I PC I wouldn't need to pay to upgrade my OS every year or whatever it is. I never dreamt that having a Mac would leave me with so few options.
Well, most PC's from when the iMac G3 was released wouldn't run two 200 gb harddrives either. You can get 10.4 on CD for an extra $9.95. You can also do an upgrade install, though I'm not sure that would work with 10.1. You can also do an archieve install, which is probably your best bet if you have some hdd space left. It archives the onld stuff, so you can copy over the old stuff to 10.4 after it is installed. Also, why do you need DVD-RAM DVD-R works just great for backing stuff up. Also, I could be wrong, but do they make 400gb IDE drives? Also, I don't think the firmware on a G3 iMac would support a single internal 400gb hdd. If you are talking external that is different. 10.1 should still see part of a 400gb external one. Copy all your backup there, install, then copy it back and reformat it in 10.4 so it see the full 400gb. I think you are making this way too difficult, you just have to think about it. A drive that supports DVD-RAM should still work with DVD-R in 10.1, and it should see part of a 400gb hdd.
I am a NEVER ENDING cycle where a million things ... leave me with so few options.
Easy! Get a 400GB firewire drive and install a fresh copy of 10.4 on it if you can. Skip this DVD/RAM-middleman-fisco altogether and use your original drive as the backup. And yes, you can RAID 2 200GB firewire drives to make a 400GB drive on Mac.
Now, my complaint: MY PISMO! NOOOOO!!! I don't need power and eye candy on a laptop. The Pismo is known as the most popular laptop Apple made. Maybe XPostFacto could help me out.

Such a shame.
sorry buddy, the time has come. you want tiger, you need dual G5, especially for high-definition content playback with avc/h.264
what's that you say? oh, right, there's NO BLOODY h.264 HIGH DEF CONTENT OUT YET
i'll wait a bit too before upgrading to Tiger...

Can I install over a network. i.e. I have an old Bondi iMac. Can I install off of DVD drive in my Powerbook over ethernet to the Bondi?
Oh yeah- Apple says must have firewire built in.
Do you think that really is a requirment?
