Extremely Slow Start Up Issue
Hello everyone. I have a concern about my 1.25 GHz PB with 1GB ram, and 80GB HD. I have been noticing now for a while that start up is becoming increasingly long. I timed it this time at just over 5 minutes between startup chime and logon screen appearing.
I've done everything I can think of. I've used Cocktail to clean all the cashes, swap all the logs, and update the prebinding. I have verified permissions with Disk Utility. I have zapped the PRAM just to see if that would work...it didn't.
What could be causing Mac OS X to be lagging like it is during startup? I've love to have a nice and zippy laptop again. All suggestions will be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Brian

Next time you do start your computer hold down
"CMD-V" after pushing the power button.
Your screen will show you, what the
computer is trying to do (or what he is missing)
while he is booting up. Maybe you'll get some
indication, what is going on.
Just a wild shot. *Some* network activities are almost
allways culprits, if startup time seems endlessly.
Tip:
Check your network settings, turn off everything,
turn off "Airport" too. Unplug the ethernet cable (if some)
Reboot, see what happens.
good luck
- Before revolving "clock-like" grey widget appears - RAM test problem
- After widget but before Welcome to Mac OS X screen - disk corruption
- During blue progress bar - network timeout
- After login - iDisk sync or app trying to get network connection
--B
provides some feedback. So others
could adjust their methods a bit.
I tried startup with one ram stick at a time and noticed no improvement or variation in performance. It's still extremely slow on start up, this time it took six minutes.
When I press the power button I immediately hear the start chime. I then see the gray apple logo about ten seconds later with the spinning thing visible. At that point in time I even put my ear to the laptop just left of the touch pad and there are extremely long pauses were I can't hear disk work at all, like it's sitting there idle. I still hear the motor of the hard drive though. After several minutes the screen turns blue and about fourty-five seconds later the logon screen appears.
After I log on, my laptop performs as usual. It's just the startup that is really annoying. I've gone to just putting it to sleep and taking it to work that way so it'll already be on when I open it up. That seems to be the best thing for me.
I checked and made sure that network startup is not selected.
I use a bluetooth mouse at home, but don't use one at work (touchpad). The bluetooth device being present doesn't have an effect on the length of startup.
I'll restart the laptop and press CMD-V and see what's going on. One thing to note though is that when I restart, the whole process takes maybe a minute. So it only seems to affect the initial startup after being turned off.
Stay tuned...
Brian
UPDATE: CMD-V showed me a lot of text that looked similar to what I see when using CMD-S for fsck. The text went by rather quickly and it booted up nice and zippy like I remember it used to.
I think when I get Tiger I'll wipe the drive after a backup of pics, music, vids and such and then put Tiger on a cleaned drive. I've never done that before, but I'm not happy with the slow startup.
Thanks for all your help, any other suggestions are welcomed. Someone may want to gather these tips and add them to the sticky for problems encountered.

...
CMD-V just displays you the processes, the computer
performs on startup anyway. Open "console.app" and you can
reread (indeed it is the current system.log) what is going on on startup.
If the problem is hardware related, you'll get
some hints between the lines. If not, it is probably
an odd software issue.
Tip: copy and post the log file here.

My friend was having problems with his old G4 (God that sounds odd to say that, I still remember when the G4 was brand spanking new and everybody was lusting after it).
It used to take a good ten minutes to boot and then didn't really do much once it was up and running. It turned out that the drive was fragmented to within an inch of it's life, and the heads were constantly churning away trying to piece everything together.

Sorry, i do mean the "system.log". If you open "console.app"
you'll read on the left side "console.log" and "system.log"
(usually the first two items).
I meant the latter. If the "system.log" file is really huge,
than start selection from the date you have the computer
rebooted the last time.
Copy post.

Do you mean the problem is (magically) solved? Or do you think
it was just by accident? Actually, i am asking because booting
by holding "CMD-V" doesn't change anything it just
displays information.
If you boot normally, does it continue to consume
a lot of time?
sorry about that mixup. Here is the system log you asked for. Thanks for your patience. Also, when rebooting, the laptop acts like it normally should, as in, it starts quickly and is it's usual zippy self. Only when left turned off for an hour or so and then restarted does it display the lethargic behavior in starting up. The CMD-V didn't surprise me in regard to reboot speed because I already knew it would go fast.
Tomorrow I'll trun off the laptop on my way to work like I used to, and then I'll copy the system log immediately after log on. That way you can see a log that will display the delay.

Turn off Bluetooth.
Boot holding down Shift to bypass crappy kernel extensions.
I use both the bluetooth mouse and keyboard at home. I use the keyboard mostly because I don't like my wrists baking on the laptop when I type.
Question for you though, why would this behaviour be recent? Virex and my bluetooth equipment never had a problem before. Is there something that can be done to return my laptop to a fast startup state again while still using these things?
Thanks for your time and patience.

lundy, I do have Virex installed on my laptop. Are you saying that I should uninstall it? I use it to check for Windows viruses to make sure I don't pass them on to other people using windows computers.

I don't use BT mouse and keyboard, but friends do
and they never encountered this sort of startup issues.
I personally don't believe that BT is the culprit.
But Virus checkers are completely different story.
It is no rumor, that they bring entire systems to
a poor crawl.
Again, i don't use them, but i am pretty much sure,
that there is a virex pref setting which allows you
to bypass virus checking on startup process (IF this is
the culprit) Maybe you have enabled this particular function.
Try to disable virex entirely just to see what happens.
I have disabled Virex and I'm not going to use it. I'll see how that works.

So I said screw it, I'll simply reinstall it. I got to the screen where you're supposed to choose a hard drive to install OS X on and there was no hard drive there to select. There we no options. My guess is that thr Hitachi drive died. I had a similar thing happen in Puerto Rico, now that I think about it.
So it's being sent back to the States so my mom can walk it into an Apple store and have them drop a new hard drive in it. I'll be buying a new iMac when they come out. Any idea when that'll be? Hopefully soon. I'm in Kuwait and everything takes forever to get here. Until then I'll be using a cyber cafe's Compaq. Oh the joys of hard drive failure.
Thank for the help you all gave.
Brian
Good luck with the Compaqz and hope the US turnaround isn't too unbearable.
