Apple 10.3.9 Java Screw-Up

I'm really annoyed that Apple would let such a flagrant break in functionality slip into 10.3.9, which I downloaded without question:



Computer:~ me$ java -version

Segmentation fault

Computer:~ me$



GRRRRR! How could they have let this through?



I'll probably only need to download Java 1.4.2 again to fix it, but this is absolutely unacceptable on Apple's part.



I switched to Mac thinking that I could still use it for Java. I'm extremely dissapointed that Apple would take this, and Java 1.5 so lightly.

    To Apple's credit, they've posted workaround instructions here:

    Still, this is a bit of an oversight on their part.

    I *think* it was less than 12 hrs from release to fix posted, it was definitely less than 24. Not bad response, but yes, annoying to have it slip through.



    What's *really* wacky is that looking through the 10.3.9, Java1.4.2 Update 2, and Sec 2005-002 receipts, *no* files in 10.3.9 are in the other two, or vice versa.



    It really shouldn't have messed up anything.

    It happens when you haven't installed Java 3D and JAI.



    The problem with most testers are that they tend to be up-to-date.

    hell, I thought I was up to date. I check for updates daily.



    That was kinda sucky. I downloaded firefox and updated the java plug in and that worked for the few hours I was down. Then did the workaround and safari is humming along nicely.



    Perhaps they were more focused upon the release of tiger and with it the update to safari.



    Stuff happens. I am glad that apple stepped up fast and dealt with the issue and quickly (relatively) resolved it.



    Now, can't wait for 10.4 (or 10.4.1 it seems)

    I don't have those installed on either of my machines. The DP500 crapped out, the PB1.5 updated just fine. Go figure. Security Update 2 and a restart did fix Java for me. The DP500 also screwed up with not installing Safari 1.3, but I'm so close to Tiger that I don't really care about that one.

    They are not part of the Java platform license. Sun makes Apple (and everyone else who ports Java extensions to their architecture) pay extra,per seat delivered, for the pleasure of letting you use those technologies. That's why it took so long for them to get to OS X, Sun wanted way too much. Now you can get it if you want it, but it still runs Apple something $$-wise.
