iBook's Future.

in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
Everybody would tell you that the current iBook is the best VALUE purchase in the current Apple offerings. Will the iBook replace the iMac? Think, the iMac is only going to get more like the iBook if it gets skiny. Is the iMac evolving into an iBook? Is the desktop iMac getting slower because of this? Any small computer will not be as good as a stationary desktop. Is the iBook going to become the iMac? The future of schools is supposedly in wireless portables, right?

Will the ibook get an updat at MWSF?

No, the iMac will not become the iBook. It's a silly idea.

Not quite what you had in mind, but I'm hoping that the iBook will get a better graphics card in January.

I wouldn't expect a non-incremental update before Tokyo (see the older threads on this topic).

I am suggesting by the way Apple is supposedly creating a smaller iMac, the two products will be similar. Which one will eventuallt bump out the other?

The difference is in the design process. While they may share the same components the iBook will always be designed with lightweight portability in mind while the iMac will be designed to sit on a desk and not be moved. This makes a huge difference for a design team on what components are used.

The portable will eventually replace the desktop. Within the next 10 years.

10 years? In 10 years there won't be portables/desktops as we know them today.

We are going to see a lot of convergence.

^^Exactly. The real question is whether it will be a laptop that takes the place of desktop computers, or something like a web tablet.
  • Reply 9 of 19
I don't know about that. History has always shown that the desktop has provided newer technology and more power at a lower price. I think that will remain for the next 10 years. There was the exception of the G3 processor, which was introduced in notebooks at the same time as desktops, but it didn't happen for the first PowerPC Mac, the 604 never made it into a notebook, the G4 took forever to get portable, and no one knows when this G5 will be portable.

    Apple knows this.

I don't think web tablets will catch on. Just because Bill Gates has one up his butt, doesn't mean the whole industry will follow. Though... it is sad watching those poor people with them on that CNET tv show.

I hope we see a 700 mhz iBook at MWSF02.

I don't think we'll see desktops and laptops merging. There are inherent advantages and disadvantages to each one, and even if they cost between the two equalizes completely, I don't this eliminates the need for two separate kinds of machines.

If for no other reason laptops are really easy to steal, while getting away with a tower computer requires a bit more effort! Think about computer labs in schools, or computers in the work place. Zero need for portability.

Given the heavy discounts that have appeared on iBooks (some places are selling them for as little as $900 brand new) I'd be suprised not to see a revision in the near future.

I hope this near future you speak of is MWSF01!

Maybe possible. They went to 600 with just a jumper change. And IBM has been making the G3 as is for a while now. The parts are probably all 700Mhz quality by now. Power consumption and heat may be issues though, untill Sahara at least. If Apple could supply me a 1Ghz iBook (not soon I think) altivec or no, I'd buy one. For a desktop, I'd wait at least untill altivec was included.

I think a lot of it depends on when they release the G5, cause if they do on the 7th, that means the iMac will most likely be bumped to G4, and all those Sahara chips that were ordered could go into the new iBooks when they're released

    SIDE NOTE:

what font does apple use in their ads? I've tried "Times" and "Times New Roman" cause I thought that was it, but it just doesn't look right... Any help would be great! Thanks!
