What are you talking about? MacOS X does not have .exe files.

I believe that he may be a switcher who just used the terminology...

I think they are asking, "How does the Finder determine which applications to list when you select the Open With... item for a file?"

IIRC, the application "registers" itself with the types of files that it can handle. When you click a file and select "Open With..." the Finder lists the applications that are registered for that type of file. There is no way for you to simply edit the list of applications that appear.

I don't mean by "register" to imply anything similar to the horrible Windows Registry, but, rather (in the old MacOS), a list of resources in the resource fork of the application that told the finder the types of files that the app deals with. The finder then queries the application files to see which can handle the file you are selecting.

It will only list files on your computer, it doesn't know about anything else.

    EDIT: Clarification.

The Adobe Creative Suite adds a pile of various mini-apps to the Open With list for images, each titled [whatever].exe. I'd like to know how to exclude that garbage too.

I had the same problem. All you need to do is search your Hard Drive for any files ending with ".exe" and delete those files. It'll be happy after that.
