I'm sorry they they chose to package the G5 in such an expensive case but $2000 for a 2 year old computer is really a joke. For $2000 I can build an Intel with a dual core 3.8 ghz chip that will run 8000 tracks and virtual instruments in Logic 5.5, and what is Apple offering? The best we can hope for is that these machines will be outdated soon. Apple is still giving me no reason to get rid of my old G4 upgraded to a 1.25gHz 7457 cpu. My biggest fear is that Apple thinks this "update" should last more than 3 months. That this time next year we get a 2.9ghz machine with whatever technology is currently on today's state of the art PC's.

I love Mac OS, I really can't work on Windows, it's just so . . . blah, but come on Apple, and why can't I have 2 optical drives on the most expensive machine you make. If you have Apple stock sell now, or be prepared for another dip.

    So.

Let's get in our predictions for (hopefully) today's announcement.

    a) What would we like ?

    b) What do we expect ?

    c) What would be insufficient ?

Personally I consider bog standard minimum for the new dual G5 2ghz as:

A sensible price (UK £1300, US $2000); 1 GB RAM installed as standard; (c'mon Apple - real world); 160 GB HD; 16x Superdrive dual layer +/-; 1.25GHz frontside bus/processor, 512K L2 cache/processor; 9600 XT 128 as min spec with upgrades available; RAM expansion to 8GB, BT, Airport, as before, but with an option for an Ive-designed BT 2-button scrolling mouse. Drop the internal modem and use the spare margin for RAM.

Little extras in the box would include: copy of iCon by Young & SImon; copy of First Amendment to US Constitution; white Apple sticker set with subliminal messages eg: "Longhorn Schmonghorn"; "What's a 'Virus ? ' "; "My Mac works - Your PC doesn't. Ever wondered why ?"

Here's hoping we get what we faithful deserve...

Speaking of the "real world"... You can't have 1.25 GHz bus with a 2 GHz G5. You can have a 1.25 GHz bus... but then you have to have 2.5 GHz processor. If you have a 2 GHz, the max bus speed is half that, 1 GHz. The bus speed of a G5 is always a simple fraction of processor speed -- I believe the choices are 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and perhaps also 1/6.

5/8th bus speed is not in the cards.

OK What I'd expect is the specs posted on Amazon - and i'm unsatisfied with that.

512MB RAM is OK for the baseline, the 2.7GHz should be 1GB.

What I would like would be:

    Dual 3.0GHz

    2 Optical Drives - 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer

    250GB HardDrive

    AirPort and Bluetooth as standard

oh and the baseline PowerMacs should have a better graphics card!

Sadly, this too is what I would like; it's not, however, what I expect.

Let's see: Apple/Amazon may confound us yet (ROTFL).

I'm not Photoshop expert, but something about those text labels doesn't seem quite right.

What you would like isn't important when it comes to proc speed. What is important is what can be done.

IBM can't do what you want. Period. End of story.

Now realistically, what do you want?

    I stand corrected.

Assuming dual processors all round, I'm interested on how Apple are going to add value to persuade us to buy the 2.3 over the 2.0 GHz.

Let's hope we find out today.

    OK what's possible, umm:

    Dual 2.7GHz

    1 GB RAM

    2 Optical Drives - 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer

    250GB HardDrive

    AirPort and Bluetooth as standard

I can go with that. And add Express bus.

    Ok, now this is sensible.

Right now the whole industry is in turmoil and people have to understand that ALL the cpu companies were caught flatfooted by 90nm.

I'd like to know when IBM can produce the GX (assuming that they will), and when the MP (which is based on the GX core) is coming out.

Or are they going to wait some more with the FX, and skip to the next generation with 65nm sometime around the beginning of 2006.

As IBM was ahead of both AMD and Intel with dual core technology, I'm surprised that they haven't already released those chips.
