Apples hardware is lacking to say the least. Its not the tech itself but how its marketed etc. why does apple force 2 CPU's on you? why not sell a single fastest next to a dual? I doubt a 1.8 G5 is going to drive a 6800UT well but i bet a single 2.7 G5 and a 6800UT would be nice. Apple what are you doing??? silly games instead of selling product. If the high end is scarce then again why 2??? Pretty hard to grow market when you are being dumb. Its like apple doesnt want you to have it your way.
I think I agree
Why do the iMacs have to be slower than the Powermacs? Why not just make the Powermacs dual, and the iMacs single, both going right up to 2.7 GHz? Maybe the iMac wouldn't look as cool, but I bet a thicker 2.7 GHz iMac would sell better than a sleek one at 2 GHz.
Why would it be difficult for consumers to differentiate between single processor = slower, dual processor = faster pro.
There is also the added benefit of Apple buying more high-clocked PPC 970 CPUs from IBM, which would perhaps create a profit incentive to scale that motherfucker a bit higher?
Save the sub 2 GHz G5s for the Mac Mini. There is absolutely no excuse for selling a desktop Mac with a G4. None. It is outright consumer rape. Does Dell try to sell anyone the Pentium Pro? No, because it's an antique! So is the G4. There are legitimate reasons to use the G4 in a laptop, but not in a desktop. Oh wait, I see a trend, look at the Mini's laptop HD!
(similar to current model, but with a desktop HD and two RAM slots)
1.6 GHz PPC 970gx $499
2.0 GHz PPC 970gx $699
PowerMini
(a mini-tower. AGP slot/PCIe slot (whichever is most popular and cheapest standard), 3 RAM slots, two HD bays, and an easy-open case a bit larger than the Cube for easy cooling)
2.0 GHz PPC 970gx $999
2.4 GHz PPC 970gx $1399
Totally impossible, I know, but nice to think about
The iMac is still expandable externally. Effective enough for "prosumer" use.
Cool! So this means the new Firewire video cards are finally out, huh? I know Sonnet was talking about gigabit ethernet dual 2.0 GHz G4 upgrade modules as well.

Right; because the Mac video card market is busting it's seems in competition, large selection, and low prices.

Correct again, because Apple designed the calibration-required, FSB-synchronized, radiator-hulking Power Mac G5's to be upgradable easily by 3rd parties.

A 23" iMac could take without problem higher clocked G5, even a dual core G5. I see no reason to make it thicker, just proportionally bigger would be sufficient.
I'm guessing the iMac G5 will go dual core in about a year. Fall 2006
With the requirements for HD video, Apple should certainly release a dual core iMac. My guess is too for autumn 2006 with a 23" dual core 2.0 GHz model. A single core 23" may come before though.

Most common rumor on iMac's ATM is that they are going to get bumped to 2.0 ghz - Faster than bootom PM, which we just saw updated.
The iMac comes with a screen, a decent sized hard disk and an oK graphics card.
The PM comes with all of that, minus the screen, which if you get a decent LCD is going to cost another $600 dollars, but added upgradeability.
The iMac can be upgraded through USB/FW (especially if it goes FW800) ports.
Why does apple still think it'll sell low end powermacs?
I wasn't disputing anything about the middle to top end models - no question they are screaming fast machines.

At this rate i would be happy if PM went dual core in a year.

Me too if we see two socket 970mp motherboards but dual-core alone isn't enough to make me happy if we just combine two slower G5 chips.
