Anyone using a 30" LCD probably wouldn't be working at a conventional desk, no? There are special "big-plasma" video editing desks for monitors of this scale.

Yea NASA uses them to track the shuttle, they are mounted to a wall.
I could absolutely do with that resolution, just scale the screen size down a bit. They could start by losing that hefty frame around the LCD, it looks ugly.
If they can produce a 5mm border on a powerbook, why not a desktop display?

Because you need to hold onto that frame to pick it up...unless you want to risk damaging your screen and getting it dirty with finger prints...

Imagine if you could Hack into NASA and track the shuttle on your 30 inch cinema display mounted on your wall
If Apple is to release a monitor this size, it might be a part of a new line of TVs for home use and/or business persentations. This way, a portible or a PM could hook up to the display and become a DVD player, presentation hub with Keynote, or a way to do your work on the comfort of your couch that is better than WebTV. Imagine having your PM downstars and then it broadcasts the DVD you placed in it through Airport to your Apple Branded TV upstairs. I would buy one in a second

You both miss the point. There is no such thing as too big. The point is you won't need to be one foot away from it to see it. I'd have a wall-sized monitor if I could get one, and get back 6 feet.
Yeah. Even if I didn't gain much real estate after I factored in the size that buttons on the screen would have to be, I would enjoy being able to focus my eyes @ 4 feet instead of the 1 foot that I am suffering through right now. My eye prescription drops -1 diopter every year this way.
I'd really like to see a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This would provide native resolution for both 720p or 1080i/p by pixel tripling or doubling respectively.
A thirty inch screen would give a nice tight 150 ppi.
I have two 21" monitors and I would happily add a third. You can never have too much space considering all the menus graphics or video programs have, not to mention its nice to keep an email window open all day at work. So a 30" flat screen would be a welcome improvement over two boxy CRT's.
Not to mention, if apple offers some sort of Tivo type functionality as rumoured this could do dual duty as a monitor and a TV for the consumer user base. Think what flat screen TV's are selling for...?
You could have this monitor in your living room with a wireless connection to your laptop, you could show DVD's, iMovies, share iPhoto slideshows and play games console style. Not to mention plug in your camcorder / cable TV etc.
I think it would be worth a $4K pricetag. The TV is currently the huge missing component in the digital hub.
I find it hard to believe that Apple would just debut a 30" screen without another trick up their sleeve.

What would be the point of such a screen. Surely I could utilize if for Flash, Pro Tools, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, ...anything with a timeline.
However, expanding on the Digital Hub and digital lifestyle that Apple is helping us so easily to establish, would a 30" screen not be a great replacement for a television...???
Soon, a Mac will be at the heart of your entertainment center. The trend started a couple of years ago, but Apple will be the ones to bring it mainstream. HP beat Apple to the punch with their Multimedia PC but it is not an attractive package IMO.
I bought a 22" for $3,995 4 years ago. I will not say I am ready for the 30" quite yet, but would probably swing it sometime in the future.
You know, last year Sandia and Livermoore were buying similar screens for around $100K apiece!
Oh, I know. I'm not holding my breath or anything. Still, I do hope to see a monitor like this (and affordable) within the next five years. Some of the new display techs should be hitting the street by then.
It'd go great with one of those 6-11MP digital cameras too.
