Would anyone else be in favor of this as well? I find it an immensely more impressive design than the G5. Mind you, the iMac G5 is impressive, but not in comparision to the iMac G4.
I've used both and I have to say I FAR prefer the floating computer instead of the lampstand. What I mean by that is the iMac G5 floats above your desk and feels far more refined and usable than the iMac G4 does.
But of course, its just my opinion and I don't expect others to go along
While you can't hang the G4 iMac on a wall, you can't beat it for screen positioning.
The swivel arm is still an impressive design allowing one rotate the screen with a touch of a finger. Unfortunately, it's this same arm that's the reason we won't see anything like it again. It simply cost too much to make.
I've used both and I feel that Apple should try using the best parts of both in their next upgrade of the iMac. The floating computer concept has the appeal of being able to fine-tune the adjustment of the monitor screen for best viewing whereas the G5 iMac is limited in its range. I also like the drawer for the DVD/CD as it has a fail safe mechanism to remove discs that get stuck. The slot loader doesn't work as well at removing stuck discs. Also, for those few out there, the drawer loader would allow you to use the mini CDs. Surely there is room here for compromise to develop another great design!
There's no point in going back to a base unit. With the right accessory the iMac G5 can give the consumer a zero footprint. You simply cannot achieve any better than that.
I imagine that if OLED takes off we'll see even thinner LCD/Computer integrations. Lighter as well.
Hell I'd love to have a Dual Monitor mount with two iMacs sitting side by side. There really is no-where to go without getting trendy again. The iMac G5 is damn near the perfect shape. Who says the computer has to have a "body" anyways?
I reckon the G5 is nicer than the G4, which wasn't too bad itself, but I'd like the G5 a bit more if it wasn't for the big hunk of plastic below the screen. Hopefully that will be cut down for the next version

I agree with you about the extra space below the screen. I'd prefer they put it behind the screen. It wouldn't make for as clean a side profile, but when you're starting at the front of a computer 99% of the time, that is what really matters.
The G4 iMac enclosure was great in its time but that time is past. The more I see the G5 enclosure, the more I like it. Even the space bleow the screen is a non-issue for me. It just seems more simplistic and elegant.
I might be willing to concede and say the G5 iMac is better if they could find a more "elegant" solution to how to handle the wires going to the back of the unit. Not everything can be done wirelessly. Wires are needed to connect some peripherals. Give me a good solution. The G4 iMac with its base allowed the wires to be at desk level and therefore, prettyy much out of sight. Unfortunately that isn't so with the G5 iMac. Apple doesn't help it any when they picture it in the ads with no wires connected whatsoever!
Apple did go a little lame on the styling but the goal was to lower its cost to make. G4 Imac is cooler looking but the chance of it ever coming back is 0. Why they stuck the big old heat producing power supply in the Imac instead of using a brick seems silly now that you think about it plus they could now stick in real videocards with no problem. Its more of the Powermac vs Imac game so they "wont" do that.
the difference between the iMacG4 20" and the iMacG5 20" is about $400.
and that's not only because the prices of 20" screens etc. plummeted.
if you take a look at the way an iMacG4 is build and an iMacG5, you'll see that the iMacG4 with it's adjustable arm and dome shape is a far more complicated, thus expensive design than the iMacG5.

I didn't like the plastics of the G4 because they often got dirty and didn't look as well.
The iMac G5 is far more flexible with VESA mounting though.
Let me know guys....
Anyway. My two cents.......
I love the new iMac and I think the old form factor was great for its time but Apple needed to move on...

I thought it best here as a "hope for things that should happen."

also is the price. i think the iMacG4 design ads about $100-$200 to it's price. \\

You can if you buy a VESA adapter and arm.

What are you basing this on?
