How do you know that you have bad ram? Can it prevent your mac from starting up? Can A DIMM become bad one day or do they generally stay good forever?

If RAM is bad it will typically crap out shortly after purchase. It CAN go bad down the road but isn't common.

I had some bad RAM last year. After installing a new 64 MB module, I experienced constant crashes and many applications with large memory allocations wouldn't launch.

If RAM works now, odds are that it will work tomorrow. I've never heard of RAM "going bad."
