Anyone know how hard it is to get an iTunes device plugin SDK license?

At the computing society at my university, we have an MP3 server type thing that we use at LANs. People upload MP3s and it plays them, sorting them so each person's music gets a good chance. I think this needs an iTunes plugin to facilitate using it - show the upcoming songs in a list, and let you drag your songs into it too.

It's not copying music, as the server just takes the file, plays it then deletes it again. Also I don't plan on releasing the plugin to anyone except compsoc members. So Apple's lawyers should be happy.

What I want to know is, how do I go about applying to license the SDK? Hopefully it won't involve parting with any cash... cross my fingers that they'll let a student ADC member use it!

    People upload MP3s...

I can wholeheartedly guarantee that they will not permit this.

Why not just control a copy of iTunes via AppleEvents/AppleScript on a Mac, or via the COM SDM on Windows, to add and remove songs from among the user-uploaded songs into the iTunes library?

Of course, the latest copy of iTunes restricts how many different users per day -- not merely how many different users at once -- may access one copy of iTunes, but you might overcome that problem by using an earlier version of iTunes or by running iTunes on more than one computer.

Erm - it's a network server type thing. They've permitted other manufacturers, and such products are available now. I'm just wondering how hard it is to get them to licence me the SDK when I'm not a big company and don't have a large sum of money...

It's a last resort. I wanted to have a nice icon in the sources list that we could drag to, though. Would be much easier than having to faff about with another program.
