Is it just me, or would WWDC be the perfect time to release a major WO update?

For me, any time would work to release a major WO update - or heck, just any update at all

There's a WebOjects session on Tuesday titled "WebObjects Overview", the description on Apple's WWDC Conference Sessions page says:

WebObjects is Apple's Java-based web application development platform. Learn about new features and get a glimpse at product directions in upcoming releases of WebObjects.

Yeah, it's a copy-paste of the same session's description from last year, so I'm not overly optimistic.

Not WO 6.0, but at least Apple released WO 5.3...

    http://www.apple.com/webobjects/

So, afai understood WebObjects development is now free as part of xCode 2.1.

Every copy of XCode 2.1 includes a WO installer, right ?

Yup, that's true. WO is for everyone now, as long as OS X is their platform of choice. But I believe they're headed in the wrong direction. IMHO, they should be embracing other platforms as well - I for one don't look forward to explaining Apple's selfish strategy to my Linux and Windows customers.

As someone just posted/asked to the WO mailing list, the deployment situation seems to be unclear on other platforms:

    http://lists.apple.com/archives/webo.../msg00132.html

    Does this mean that

    a) I can still buy a deployment license from Apple and am free to deploy on other platforms (but officially only OS X Server 10.4 is supported where WO deployment is free as it was before)

    or

    b) Deployment is free but unsupported on other platforms.

    c) A hack is needed for both development/deployment on Eclipse/other platforms.

    Anyone ?

Well, apple remains silent on the issue (surprise, surprise). But according to the WO 5.3 tech specs , the only supported platforms for WO deployment are OS X and OS X Server. Previously they listed Linux and Windows as supported as well, so this is a big change.

I'm guessing you can circumvent this and still deploy on Windows and Linux (paying for the deployment licenses as before, of course) but Apple does not support deployment on these platforms.

Whatever that means, it isn't as if their "support" for WO has been overwhelming for the past decade anyway.

Great, not even the WWDC attendees seem to be able to agree...

Roll your own, Apple doesn't care...but it's unsupported:

    http://lists.apple.com/archives/webo.../msg00143.html

    and

    http://lists.apple.com/archives/webo.../msg00150.html

    and finally...

    http://lists.apple.com/archives/webo.../msg00153.html

So deployment is possible at $ 499 (used to be $ 699 when it was 'supported') on other platforms as a Java war-file, but not officially supported ? Did I get this alright ?

I'm fine with that. WebObjects ran fine on Linux although that also was never officially a supported platform. As Hugi mentioned, there is no difference in WO's case between supported and unsupported

Only strange thing will be explaining this to a customer:

Customer: So, I want the WebObjects app running on my Windows server. Is that possible ?

Me: Yes, runs fine but is not officially supported. You will just need to buy a copy of Mac OS X Server at $ 499

Customer: Yeah, I read about that. Apple is switching to Intel. So, I will install that Apple thing on my Windows server..

Me: Ummm, actually no. You just need the deployment license from the WebObjects copy included in OS X Server

    Customer: ?????

Me: Or you could buy an XServe and get WebObjects deployment for free

Customer: But that will run OS X Server on Intel. Isn't that the same thing ?

Me: No, and it will only run on Intel in 2007. But you can buy a server now with PPC processors.

    Customer: ????????????????

    Me: Just sign here

Ok, this summary should describe the new situation regarding WebObjects 5.3 licensing nicely...

Hope this helps people interested in WebObjects who can't attend WWDC this year

BTW, that is not my blog

Well it's about time they made WebObjects development free. Let folks mess around with it, and see if they like it. After I had a taste of WO I sure didn't want to go back to PHP. 8) That and it's great that it's included with the normal Xcode install. It really felt like a bastard child before.

As it appears that you are only able to "officially" deploy to OS X, it would also be cool if they brought back Objective-C. The biggest downside to Objective-C WO was the lack of portability, but with the new stance on deployment it would be a cool option.
