Future architechure

A contact at Microsoft has provided me some information stating that Microsoft is in the process of porting over their windows operating system to PPC architecture. With the increased popularity of the Xbox 2 which uses IBM POWER 976 technology, Microsoft sees this as an opportunity to increase their market share and provide more hardware options.

They note that lots of the underlying Windows code has already been ported for the Xbox operating system, and most of the remaining code will need little adapting before it can be recompiled. They claim that the first version that will be available for both architectures will be Longhorn. They did not give an exact date when that will be.

This has been rehashed to death in other threads. Given that a low-end PC is in the same price range as the Xbox 360, it doesn't make sense to use the 360 for general computing.

So Microsoft will get Windows running on Mac hardware, and the onslaught will ensue. After extensive MS lobbying, the republican congress will pass into a law a bill requiring all computer hardware makers to sell their hardware with any OS the consumer desires (to smash the terrible, wicked monopoly Apple has over hardware!). And since Macs are somewhat associated with artists and gays, media personalities and their GOP benefactors will start a vigorous whisper campaign slandering Apple as a "fag company".

Yep, Apple is doomed...in the US, at least.

Great, JYD! And of course you forgot the MPAA/RIAA-sponsored bill requiring DRM on the mobo, which will mandate WMA. "Freedom is slavery!" will be the cry on the lips of the jackbooted feds as they bulldoze the last Macs into the ground.

Methinks someone's irony detector went on the blink.

Unless you're a Merkin, in which case you probably don't have an irony detector (and no, it's not a magnet).

Microsoft is trying to emulate Apple, and get hold of its hardware market by using the xbox 360 to cut out Dell and the other PC makers.

Xbox 360 gets them off the x86 and gives them a fresh sheet where they don't have to support a billion hardware drivers. The needs of most 90% of the market are met by an xbox 360 with Office and IE.

You have it reversed. The 360 will be far more powerful than any low-end PC, so the logical thing to do is use the 360 for games and general computing instead of spending extra money on a low-end PC just for general computing.
